Achievements

Bear with me if this is already discussed here...

As far as we know ED will have general achievement meter, and that's classic Harmless/Mostly Harmless/Dangerous/Elite, which what I have heard so far could be achieved not only by kills.

However as ED is very open ended, to get some new players or old ones a little bit initiative to stay longer, or even log some online hours, there should be additional achievements, probably with unlocking some extras in the end. That would also give additional sense of evolving galaxy.

I've a feeling that it might have been discussed before, but may be lost somewhere in the depths of the forum. If memory serves, there was some disagreement between the hardcore immersion crowd (seeing a message about an achievement may be seen as immersion breaking) and those that liked them.

My view is I'm fine with them as long as they don't require grindy unnatural play. The best suggestion I've heard is one from an episode of Lave radio ... the achievement of docking backwards:D

if it ends up on steam there will be achievements, but to be honest Steam achievements are not a big thing unlike PSN or XBOX.

Indeed. I think I can speak for everyone when I say, all us hardcore immersion-types want is an 'off' button, though. It should be easy enough to implement, should Frontier go that way.

Indeed, a big fat juicy **** OFF button! ;) Any proper story related achievements, such as ranks, reputations, etc are fine but if there are WoW style "achievements" then I'd rather be completely oblivious to their existence - both mine and other peoples. :)

<nods> Aye... I've no need for 'achievements' in the game either.

For some reason, a Pink Floyd lyric comes to mind:

Come on my friend, let's make for the hills
They say there's gold and I'm looking for thrills
You can get your hands on whatever we find
'cause I've only come along for the ride

Well you go your way and I'll go mine
I don't care if we get there on time
Everybody's searching for something, they say
I'll get my kicks on the way

Absolutely 100% No.

Any kind of WoW/Steam type achievement system is a deal breaker as far as I'm concerned. Actually playing and progressing through ED should be achievement enough. If you need that kind of externalised, condesending self-agrandising garbage please look elsewhere.

I don't know how the WoW achievements work but I recently bought a game on Steam, Legend of Grimrock, and I found that system somewhat ok.

The minus was that there was a notification showing up on-screen/in-game (I don't know if that is possible to disable or not, but I guess/assume it is).

But after some while of playing the game it was fun to go through the achievements I had unlocked, remembering the moments. Happy times :)

If I don't care for the achievements I don't need to browse them. No problemo.

I am not particularly, a gamer. What do you mean by achievements?

They're kind of like little pats on the back, but they have no context in the story, unlike the Elite ratings and the reputations.

Examples could be like -

Killed a pirate.
Killed a pirate with a pulse laser.
Killed a pirate with a beam laser.
Killed a pirate with a missile.
Earned 50 credits in a trade.
Earned 100 credits in a trade.
Earned 1000 credits in a trade.
Mined an asteroid.
Mined 10 asteroids.
Scooped a cargo pod.
Scooped fuel.
Scooped a mine.

There can be literally thousands of them! Some people like them and some even make it their primary goal to accomplish them all.

These are some real World of Warcraft ones -

Obtain an Armored Brown Bear from Mei Francis in Dalaran.
Obtain a companion pet.
Equip an epic item in every slot with a minimum item level of 359.
Equip a superior item in every slot with a minimum item level of 333.
Reach maximum level on both an Alliance and a Horde character.
Loot 100 gold.
Loot 1,000 gold.
Loot 5,000 gold.
Loot 10,000 gold.
Loot 25,000 gold.
Loot 50,000 gold.
Loot 100,000 gold.

I think it would be a nice feature to add if you could be awarded medals for missions that you complete or for acts of kindness to humanity.

For example...

Federation Military Cross
Federation Medal Of Honor
Imperial Silver Star
Federation Peace Prize Winner

I think that these would look rather nice on your profile and could be considered to be a contributing factor as to whether or not you could be suitable for more difficult missions.

I agree that story backed achievements have some mileage... if that's what the OP intended then I apologise for derailing onto banal, WoW style achievements! ;)

Ahh, yes, yes, yes!
Like Wulf, I also want a gold badge when I reach Elite (in any discipline). I'd like a certificate too - signed by DB.
I'd be prepared to pay for it! :)

Ah ok, thank you Jabokai. Yes why not if they are achievements that increase the prestige of the player. But already when we progress in the Elite ranking, at each step we have new offerings of missions. Finally Elite Frontier II is like that.

I find that achievements force me to play the game in ways I hadn't originally intended or imagined and generally give me a fuller appreciation of the game as a whole.
