Across the Abyss - my routes to Beagle Point and Semotus Beacon

This is a recap of my recent journey across the Abyss to Beagle Point and Semotus Beacon, including complete route info to both (within spoiler tags). Also, some content in the hyperlinks may be considered (mild) spoilers, use your own discretion with those. The jump ranges required to reach the targets are openly listed below (not considered spoilers). My ship had a jump range barely enough for the latter part of the journey and not very much margin to the first, so while the routes are not necessarily minimal jump range routes, they may be useful if you are similarly limited by jump range as I was.

My journey originally started from the bubble about a year ago, with the main goal of visiting Sagittarius A*. At that point I just had a small thought in the back of my head of maybe continuing on to Beagle Point if I have the perseverance. I had read a little about even further systems, but disregarded those as definitely impossible for me.

At the time of my leaving, I was anxious to get moving instead of grinding the ship setup to optimal (and learning what that would be), so I searched the net enough to find out that "to reach Beagle Point a jump range of 33.4 LY is needed" (forum discussion). I had under me an Anaconda, which I'd setup with the idea that "most expensive must be best => A class everything" (which I later realized wasn't exactly optimal for exploration jump ranges, but by that time I was already long gone). I also didn't want to risk flying without shields etc., so although I'd read that an Anaconda could theoretically be maxed out to around 80 LY or so, mine was at just about 33.5 LY or so. Back in the bubble I thought, well that should be enough, let's get moving.

So I flew with this ship and eventually reached Sagittarius A* successfully. After that part of my trip I took a breather of almost six months, until I decided to continue on. At Explorer's Anchorage near Sagittarius A* I looked again at Beagle Point with some more seriousness, and started to feel my margin was a bit too tight, and I dropped my passenger cabin to the storage there, which gave me a bit more jump range, to around 35 or something, with which I thought I should at least theoretically reach Beagle Point.

I also hadn't paid much attention to FSD injections - I new they existed and that they required some materials and that they could extend the jump range somewhat, but that was about it. I had a bunch of materials randomly collected in my ship, and I checked that I have materials for a few FSD syntheses. During my trip forward from the Galactic Center I realized two things. First was that my materials were lacking just a few crucial ingredients to give me more FSD injections, so I decided to drop by on a couple of planets on the way to collect some more, mainly Vanadium and Polonium, with which I eventually got my injection capability to something like 30, 28, 18 (basic, standard, premium - don't remember the exact numbers). The second thing I realized was the Deep Space Support Array project, of which I'd initially read some note in a news somewhere, but dismissed as a nice idea but not ready and applicable then. Or more precisely, I decided to check on it and found out that it actually was pretty much all set, and the galaxy has loads of stop-off points on the way - utilized this map. So I realized I have ways to "save my game" in several points instead of having to return back to Explorer's Anchorage for that. Big thanks for the DSSA project, the carriers to be found during the way were real oases on the way to ease the stress!

So I continued on, visiting a few fleet carriers until I arrived to a carrier at the edge of the Abyss, from which I could start my attempt at crossing. My idea was to try to find my own route, but just to ease my mind I did a cursory glance on existing routes to get a strengthening of belief that I am at the right neighborhood, and that if I find myself lost, I can expect to then find an exact route from the net to which I can backtrack, if necessary. For this purpose I found the info about Route 33.

It turns out, that I succeeded in finding my own route all the way to Beagle Point, with really no problems.
My previous worry had been about non-scoopable stars in the way - what if although my jump range is enough for the stars, they are not scoopable and I can't find fuel enough. Turns out, that in the Abyss there seems to be very little non-scoopable main stars - in my entire crossing I encountered less than five.

The route I used to get from the edge of the Abyss to Beagle Point is below (in the spoiler section).
This route starts from the DSSA fleet carrier Eleanor at Cho Thua NL-C b40-0.

Beagle Point27.16 ly

Having arrived at Beagle Point finally I was happy. But by then I'd realized that I'd made it that far without having to use any FSD injections, and I also realized that the FSD injections can actually double the jump range (in the Premium model) and I started thinking: "If I can't get to Semotus Beacon, I could for fun test how far further I might be able to reach". I first found this page about the ranges, and from there the fact, that a jump of 82.68 would be required. Starting to realize the best FSD injection doubling I understood, that it would "only" require a 41.34 LY base range, and as my range was at around 35 LY, it didn't seem that far off anymore.

By the time I also understood that with D class equipment I could get better jump ranges, so I started to see if I could get any. I had loads of old equipment from my previous ships left to storage back in the bubble, so I thought to transfer something from there. Unfortunately I didn't really have suitable D components still. I tried transfering a smaller shield and life support, but realized that their maximum mass was still too low to be used (I couldn't get my ship that light even by stripping everything). The certainty of this I got after waiting 180 hours (7.5 days) for the transfer to cross the entire galaxy).

So I was stuck with whatever equipment I had on hand. So then I turned to stripping my ship for storage at the fleet carrier in Beagle Point. After removing everything (including SRV hangar - no riding around the last planets or collecting materials) and my shield generator (better not crash anything!) I actually got my ship to a state of full jump range 40.23 LY and unladen jump range of 42.46 - a full 1.12 LY over the minimum limt at unladen! I realized I was cutting it dreadfully close, but that was the absolute maximum I could get my range to with the equipment at hand.

I decided to give it a shot and see what happens. With the DSSA fleet carriers, I rationalized that having reached Beagle Point, the worst that could happen would be for me to be stranded and forced to self-destruct (or destroyed), and I should spawn back to Beagle Point.

Then I started looking for a route to Semotus Beacon (Oevasy SG-Y d0). For this trip I didn't hesitate to use earlier findings, and I found also this tool. It looked very nice to list a route from Beagle Point to Semotus Reach, but I was blummoxed to find it had actually a longest jump as 86.68 LY in the middle of the route, instead of the 82.68 maximum I'd found earlier and calculated against.

I was a bit disappointed, but then I thought to trust what this page told me, when it gave the impression its route's start point could be reachable "more easily" than the full route.

And indeed it happened, that although I had to make a little detour making the full trip somewhat longer, I was able to avoid the longest jumps in the route preceding the end part. Instead of the 22 jumps in the route, my route contains 36 jumps, but it allows one to make it with somewhat lower jump range.

Within this route, the longest jump was still quite tight, and I had to get myself to very nearly the "unladen" state, which meant that I had to eventually dump my cargo (I had hauled some 20 tons of randomly mined materials from along the way and other stuff with me all the way). When faced with the longest jump, I had to finally jettison these also.

My full route from Beagle Point to Semotus Beacon (including my syntheses) is below (in the spolier section).

Within this route I used 2 Basic FSD injections, 3 Standard FSD injections and 2 Premium FSD injections (one way, same amount on return trip).

For the arrival, the second-to-last jump with the longest distance was quite tight, I had to have my fuel tank very low and all cargo jettisoned to be able to make it. Having succeeded it, I thought that I am free to scoop my tank full since the remaining jump is shorter. A bit too late I realized, that with the full tank, I might actually still have too much fuel to be able to make the return trip.

Upon arrival to Semotus Beacon I was positively surprised to find fleet carriers there too. Now I was faced with a dilemma, on one had my idea was to dock there and "save my progress", but before doing that I realized, that if I do that, and then fail to cross the long jump on the return trip for some reason, then I won't respawn to Beagle Point but instead back here, which could truly strand me at the edge. (Well I could try to persuade the fleet carrier owner to jump me away, but didn't like that prospect.) So I refrained from docking there.

I spent a little time mapping the system completely and flying to the furthest moon (Salomé's Reach) to take some pictures etc. My other dilemma here was, do I dare try to land to the planet. I had no SRV so I couldn't drive around but at least I could have landed at the galaxy's edge, but without shields I was worried of making a rough landing and trashing my ship. Eventually I decided to risk it, since I'm unlikely to return there soon, if ever. So I did a careful landing and it went without problems, and there I was sitting at the furthest possible point (for me).

Eventually I started for the return trip. After the first jump, when I was facing the long jump, I indeed noticed that my fuel tank has a bit too much content. The course plotter gave me (with 0 tons cargo) a maximum range of 82.53 LY, when the jump required 82.68 LY. I thought one option for me would be to jump back to Semotus Reach and here again, trying to scoop just the right amount of fuel to be enough but not too much. But the problem there would be for one it would use two of my FSD injections "for nothing" and it still could be difficult to get just the right amount of fuel scooped.

So I went with the second option - I just flew in supercruise towards the next system until my fuel diminished that way enough to give me the necessary 0.15 LY more of range. And so I supercruised for 45 minutes, watching the maximum range in the course plotter creep upwards. In this process I made a personal supercruise speed record, got to just over 1900 c. I know 2001 c is the maximum and was interested to see if I reach that, but didn't quite (and didn't have the patience to wait for that just for that - and also was concerned of eating too much of my fuel out). I had traveled 0.12 LY in that supercruise. Interestingly, the galactic map didn't seem to take this into account, it showed the distance as the same 82.68 all the time. I was speculating, that if it actually would take that into account, then I wouldn't have had to travel quite as far in supercruise, as my actual distance by the time I jumped was something like 82.2 LY or so (based on the HUD indication).

Having succeeded the long jump also back, I then flew back to Beagle Point following my same route, landed on the fleet carrier, and re-equipped my ship with all the components I'd left there, and breathed a sigh of relief and satisfaction of a completed adventure in the Abyss!

For precision with scooping, turn off the scoop then fly just close enough to start scooping and no closer then stop (slow to 30km/s). Turn the scoop on, turn off when you have enough. You can blip it on and off again as needed, if you need to check your current range on the galmap every 0.1t because it's that tight.

Good point! I didn't realize one could use turning off the scoop for that, but indeed that would make it easier to scoop precisely!
