Simple: just as you get small text based samples in SC, do the same with active crew. Right now they spring to life in combat, and then vanish into a shoebox until the next time.
You could tailor it to their personality: they could disapprove of your shady deals, or even point out 'this station sells drugs / slaves- lets get rich!'
You could build in triggers with events: meeting Thargoids, being scanned etc. It certainly would make them more 'alive' and that its not just you sat there.
