Having a comms panel being a comms panel would be great, especially for voice comms.
Here's an idea how amateur radio could be implemented in E D.
1. Players are assigned a 'frequency' on a band, where bands could be however it would be broken down to accommodate players.
2. If cmdr's were on voice comms, their frequency would beacon, where a beacon could be seen in a waterfall display, so other players could change frequency and talk voice.
3. Nets could be reserved for non-emergency traffic for groups - and others can listen or talk in the net.
4. Potentially, but maybe hard to simulate, would be to have celestial bodies, objects, et cetera, effect comms based on distance between the talking pilots.
This would allow explorers to feel like they're exploring, or other players listen to a battle or PVP session net while going about their business, or could just be a way for pilots in open interact with other pilots beyond the system they're in and beyond who's in their friends list.
