actual naval career?

I realize that we have naval ranks, but currently they mean nothing but an unlock for faction ships. I personally think that an actual career in the respective factions' navies would be very interesting to say the least. For example, even if you are at the rank of Admiral in the Federation or Count in the (glorious) empire, you are still addressed as commander. I feel it would be fitting that you are addressed properly by at least your own faction. An idea for the naval career is that you are called upon to participate in battles in which the (glorious) Imperial navy or the Federation navy is taking part in, in return perhaps you would receive a salary similar to the kind you get in PP. When AI crews eventually get implemented, it would be super cool to have a crew made from (glorious) Imperial naval crews or Federation crews as well, thats a huge plus in immersion. There are probably a dozen things you can have with faction naval careers but im just tossing it out there that it would be an idea id be super behind, like if it were an expansion id pay for it kind of behind...

We are addressed as commander, because we are commanding our own ships. Just like the commanding officer of a wet navy ship is always addressed as captain, no matter what his actual rank is.

So even admirals are always addressed as captains? isn't that a bit of a problem since captain is its own rank?

Pretty sure we're all commanders by courtesy due to commanding our own ships, but a naval rank is a different thing

It's very, very rare for an Admiral to command a ship- the only time it might happen is if the CO of a carrier gets promoted early. In that case, he'll be referred to by his rank, but his positional title will still be Captain of the ship.

If that admiral is commanding his own vessel, then he is still the captain. I think the protocol, when there is another person of the same rank present, is to address him as commodore, in order to avoid confusion. Or if it isn't a naval rank, then he is addressed as major.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I'd love it if the naval careers involved more than they currently do.

I'm not so sure true military careers in game would be such a good idea.

At the moment we're all (to borrow a character from a different franchise) Edison Trents, We're all civilians freelancing, and our ranks are honorary titles not real ranks. We can tell the military where to go at any time. If we had actual military careers rather than honorary ranks we'd be under orders. A great deal of the game's freedom would be wiped out for those who took it up. I doubt that either the Feds or the Impies would have tours of less than several years.

That's not to say I wouldn't mind a bit more in the way of military missions and such. I used to love the recon and base destruction missions in FE2. Nukey missles for the win :D

I imagine it wouldnt have to be the mainstream (glorious) imperial / federal navy but rather a branch under it in which you are allowed to freely operate. The orders i imagine you could ignore at your own peril with demotions accompanying a sufficient number of orders ignored. Besides, as a specialist i doubt you have to remain the entire tour. (whole civil wars end in like half a week in this game anyways). Besides, some of us like to have a sense of belonging

I think I'd prefer a Letter of Marque. You're still your own person, but the sponsoring state will look the other way/supply you with guns and stuff as you carry out your barbarous acts of terrorism all for the glory of the Federation/Empire.

by protocol, it would be exceedingly bad form, but technically if an Admiral on the flag bridge relieved the Captain who was CO of the ship and assumed command - or if the Captain was injured - then yes, the Admiral would be both CO of the Fleet as Admiral, and Captain in official protocol for the ship.
(*bad form as in by normal customs of the service, the next senior officer in the CoC for the ship would ordinarily take over as Captain - the XO or Exec Officer)

But in actual naval practice, an Admiral who had assumed command of a ship would still be referred to as Admiral - can't speak for every navy, but in the USN and most western navies I've heard of, an officer of higher rank who assumes command of a vessel is referred to by his highest rank. An officer of lower rank than the title of Captain is still referred to by the ancient title of Captain.

I don't think "admiral" sounds like a civilian honorary rank. And about freedom - well, do you feel much freedom in PP? There's none, it's a second work, so why wouldn't naval career be different?

No.

PP is quite different. In a military you are issued orders. You have to go where you're told and do what you're told. You get go no choice whatsoever.

The PP leaders offer merits for certain things, but you are under no obligation to actually do anything. You can sign up to a faction and do Sweet Adams for them. Your freedom isn't restricted in the least.

Then there is the matter of leaving. You can't just walk away from military service until your tour is over. It's called deserting and is a crime. People have been hanged for it. Heck people have been hanged for leaving a battle due to shell shock.

Leaving a PP power or even defecting isn't a crime at all. They might come after you for a day or two, but that's it. After that all is forgiven.

The best analogy to being a member of a PP is like the olden days of being a 'Privateer' - a duly registered individual who had a letter of marque from that power to wage war against its enemies, but was not a member of that power and in fact, many times, could be plausibly denied as being employed by that power.
(e.g. age of sail and privateers attacking merchant ships or colony outposts of the Spanish by Dutch and English privateers)

I think we need Imp/Fed stations to issue new missions with Required Naval Rank instead of (or as well as) the pilot fed and relationship requirements. These would appear on bulletin boards like normal missions, but would have a more 'navy' feel to them (combat, espionage, escorts, rescues, etc.) They would also pay quite well!
That's what was done way back in Elite 2. It has the huge advantage (for FDev) of being relatively simple to implement, since it doesn't require a huge new system to be put in place (cf. powerplay).

I have to laugh when the existing Navy rank up missions consist of stuff like smuggling beer, or stealing silver for a 'party'. And the best way to get invited to the navy is to be a humanitarian philanthropist. I'm sure that's just how it works in the real navy!

It would be nice to receive specific military missions dependent on naval rank, then earn medals. Something similar to Elite 2 springs to mind.

Even if an Admiral is sat next to the Captain on board the Captain's own ship, the Captain's orders to his crew outrank any orders given by the Admiral to the Captain's crew, as ultimately it is the Captain's own vessel and his own command. I think this is why...

Yeah, collecting medals (as side quests if you like) through mission story boards could be a really good way for FDEV to deliver a military career to those Cmdrs that want it, without affecting the core roles.

i imagine once waking around gets implemented we'll get to create our characters. Perhaps you can wear your medals on your uniform (faction naval uniforms could be rank unlocks). That would be pretty frickin awesome. In fact i think the system from Pirates of the Burning Sea comes in handy in this aspect
