Acurrate star maps and (alleged) planets near Sol?

Maybe a 50 light year radious 'tank' can be made and what ever goes on there would be more or less up to date of what is being observed,
Like the brown dwarf closer than barnards star, etc.

Would it be completely unworkable to have the Elite universe change to match updated real-world data about planets in our vicinity as it comes in?

I could imagine that it might be a bit disconcerting to have planets appear or disappear overnight, but if the data stored about a system is relatively abstract (demographics, economy etc.), then players wouldn't lose anything after such a change. I guess if they had just spent the last month trying to destabilise the region for nefarious economic purposes then they might be a bit put out by real-world-reality destabilising things a little too much?

I have mentioned this in the feature requests thread stickied at the top (search for exoplanets), and will also mention it in the Design Forum when it's set up :)

Don't forget most of the exoplanet discoveries are still theory!

Alright, everything I understand about the techniques and double checking that they go through suggests that there are planets where it is thought, but only one or two are large enough to have actually been imaged.

AFAIK, we know nothing about any satellites they may or may not have, or even if we have a complete planet list for the systems that have been looked at.

Complete system info no, but they do have confirmation of the ones they have found, those will exist once you get there to view them. Some even are able to have an element of their atmospheres detected using light colour analysis! We've come along way since even FFE was released (no confirmed exoplanets), and i'm sure David has been keeping up with all this, i suspect he is a fan of astronomy.

So yeah as the OP mentions i suspect we will have what we had in Frontier and FFE, a realistic representation of the systems we actually know about for a core part of the galaxy, then pure procedural creation out beyond that. It was a big part of what made Frontier and FFE so interesting to navigate around, you had all these real stars.

...and DrWookie is a genuine real-life exoplanet expert, so E:D should continue to push the boundaries of accuracy, as it has always done :)

I'm sure the science is solid, and I'm sure the planets will be there... I think actually seeing them is the only true 100% way to know they're really there. We're probably on 98% though so not to worry :)

For me, its not just the discovery of exoplanets that I find exciting for this project - the scientific understanding since FE2/FFE has come on in leaps and bounds, if you thought frontiers procedural generation was convincing, I absolutely cannot wait to see E: D's take on it.

I would love to see a good 10-15 minute dev diary just talking about (with examples) procedurally generating the stars, planets and moons.

I expect to see liquid water planets only where they should exist, (but maybe surprise ice finds at the poles of some, like mercury), planets too small to hold an atmosphere not having one, and any number of other things that we now (think) we know about planet formation.

Out of the some 3000 suspected planets, about 800+ of them have now been confirmed. Only 1 has been directly observed as far as I'm aware, but that isn't in visible light, a second one from a few years ago that was claimed to have been a planet directly imaged in visible light probably wasn't a planet as had been originally thought.

From my understanding, it would have to be handcrafted as to find the right seed that describe our universe, would be impossible(the model is too inaccurate?). But yeah, travelling though the existing universe including visiting the future earth would be very cool.

Many candidate planets are detected by periodic fluctuations in the amount of light emitted from a star. There are however a number of phenomina which cause periodic fluctuations in the amount of light emitted from a star. A recent paper calculated that the frequency with which fluctations are caused by a second star, in orbit around the first, just grazing the disk (from our point of view, from Earth) and so appearing similar to a planet, had been significantly underestimated and that a good number of candidate planets were not in fact planets.

On that page, there is something like 2000 stars within 50 light years, and at least 4 times that may brown dwarfs.

I wonder if brown dwarfs are going to be in the game.
