I had this idea a while back, but it quickly fell off the first page and is since locked.
But basically, this idea is mainly for lower end hardware (and consoles?) and is a "solution" to the wildly different FPS some of us get during various activities in Elite.
When playing ED, you may notice your FPS tanks during planetary landings, and docking (Mine used too on my older GPU, but no longer does), and your GPU prepares for Armageddon.
But then in open space, it shoots up to your FPS limit (in my case, 60fps), and your GPU is now as cool as a cucumber. Lol
So, my idea is adaptive supersampling (or even adaptive graphics. Depends what can be changed on the fly)
An option (not mandatory at all) which detects if your FPS is tanking, and lowers your supersampling (or whatever) a little to maintain a smooth frame rate. If your FPS is pinned at maximum, it can raise your supersampling to give you a better image.
A time delay can prevent rapid changes when fps dips momentarily, like during transitions (or when Windows wakes up. Lol)
Then, if you're like me, you can opt to maintain a fairly steady frame rate, over image quality.
From what I've read on the forums, high-end hardware is basically pinned at maximum FPS at all times, so this isn't really for you guys, but lower end hardware is where the FPS difference is the greatest.
Heck, my laptop, which is well below minimum requirements, goes from 45fps in empty space, to just 5fps on a planet at 1.0 supersampling. But 0.5 supersampling makes planets playable at 30~fps. But it's a pain to change it each time I need to land.
It's an extreme example. Lol
