General Add Block List on the insurance screen

I personally don't like the player's notification of impending danger, there is no element of surprise.

But I still want to simplify the blocking mechanism for people if they want it.

So I suggest :
If YOU are killed by another commander, then display his name on the insurance screen with the option to put him on your blocklist. The person seeing this will decide how he will act next.

Block is already an option in the CMDR search under the social menu and in the contacts log.

It's hard to make it simpler than that, unless the goal is to tacitly discourage hostile interactions between CMDRs by framing block as a preferred reaction to ship destruction by one...which is not something that has been previously implied, or that appears to be intended.

Why do people block other players? Yes you can find it in the menu and logbook but it ultimately contributes to blocking a player for nothing. Learned the name and decided to block him or purposely used the blocking to change the game.
If this option is only possible from the insurance screen then it would be a real blocking of that person that harmed YOU.
And it would be hard to abuse it by blocking players for other reasons.

Why do people block other players?

In practice, for any reason they feel like, or no reason at all.

However, I highly doubt the main intent was to remove the threat of combat encounters from Open.

Blocking a player because their CMDR shot yours down is blocking them for nothing. At least in the current system, the game doesn't go out of it's way to suggest players do this.

It is very difficult to harm or harass me by shooting down my CMDR's ship in a game where this is explicitly a risk.

Maybe YOUR block list is empty? I recently cleaned mine out and was surprised to find someone there.
But I suggest this option to make it easier for newbies to block if they really want to block someone.

Still sore that no-one likes the autoblock suggestion either?

If i remember rightly (it's been a long while since I was last killed) The game alreaady states "you were killed by X", where X is the thing or name of the CMDR that kills you.

In other words, they can already decide what they are going to do next without further complicating an already complicated (for newbies & older players alike) insurance buyback screen.

I can see the use for this for new players, to learn about the block function, especially if they repeatedly get killed by the same player.

Perhaps it would be enough to show a tooltip on the rebuy-screen, IF the player got killed by another player, this tooltip only informs about that there is a block function, and in that tooltip have an option to not show this tips again.

So the player still have to decide if they want to use this function or not, and if they want to block a player, they have to use the existing methods to block that player. So this could help out new players that encounter those seal clubbers, as they are now informed that they can block the player that keeps killing them.

Also other players that might have played for years, and they do not know about this option. would get this tooltip informing them about this option too. This might be their first time they got killed by another player.

And for those players interrested in PvP, it should be quite easy to remove this tooltip, so they are not nagged about this everytime they die in a PvP fight.

Newbies don't even know what it is.
The thing is newbies don't know much, that's why they are called newbies. If it is deemed that FD have to wrap up all newbies in cotton wool (more than they are doing now) by forcing the blocking route on them, will FD enforce that all newbies are given ADC's to save on landing and take off crashes? Will every new player be given a fuel scoop (with detailed instructions on it's use) to ensure no new player runs out of fuel because of mis-adventure? They have to learn that the galaxy can bite back, and has big teeth and it is better that they get nipped when they are in their free Sidewinder than after they are taking their brand new Anaconda out after 10 hours of play.

There is a myriad of information about the game floating around, and I think it would be a very rare new player who doesn't at least google some aspect of the game to garner some additional information that isn't included in the tutorials and manual. And as you know the majority of information on the web will mention gankers.

So to be honest I really don't think too many newbies are ignorant of the ganker situation around places like Engineers etc. Sure they might try it once, maybe thinking the tales of woe are exaggerated but I can't see them returning time and time again if they know they will be ganked. Give these new Commanders some respect for being smart, I would think most would switch to Solo after one or at worst, two ganks.
