Add 'Diplomatic Status' for players who want PVE only

Why remove Solo?

Yes, no need to remove Solo

Having read many different comments in this valuable debate I think the following would be ideal...

Open - full on as now
Open PVE - using mechanisms as per my first post
Groups - as now
Solo - as now

Gosh I completely removed the significance of removing solo.... shudders... memories of no offline version come to mind...

I'd be quite happy with an Open and an official Open PvE mode. (+ Solo and PG)

I bounce between all 3 modes based on my mood anyway. If there was Open PvE, I'd probably still bounce between them all. Probably less Mobius, but I do still join other tiny PGs.

Sometimes unwanted PvP is exciting, other times it's just annoying. But I do like the uncertainty of not knowing a CMDRs intentions in Open.
But then sometimes I don't want that uncertainty, or some going to ruin my fun, while I'm teaching a newbie or something. So I must be in the correct mood for Open.
Then other times I'm just an antisocial b****** and lurk in solo for no other reason than "leave me the hell alone!".

Couldn't they just provide an option when you first create your commander?

>PVE
>PVP

Then separate the galaxy into two instances?

There's already an engineering mod for weapons to prevents friendly fire, just add a similar technology to the PVE group.

Frontier chose not to do that - and we all share the same single shared galaxy state, regardless of game mode or platform, by design.

Indeed.

Frontier also chose to permit us to mode switch at will.

Maybe they shouldn't have...

I don't know. I enjoy myself just fine tootling along in Möbius and honking hello whenever I see another CMDR, but that's about all the interaction I get, it's not like we can do each other's boom time delivery of gold, we're both off doing our own thing. I'm sure it's better for Mitch and Paul who go to school with each other to share strategies during the day and then meet up together at night and head out into the black, but I'm a greying dad with very few gamer buddies.
My point is that the multiplayer feature in this game isn't very well organised, you can't play in open without the fear of being ganked while doing the rounds in your T6 by a PVP player who (to be fair) probably just wants to meet up with other players and have a good fight in their spaceship.

Why couldn't the CQC thing have been placed into the game properly and mixed with Powerplay? Taking territory's together like one galactic scale version of Risk?

I've been here 8 months and witnessed the whole pvp vs pve war raging on for some time. Rather than continue to try and find ways to separate these two clans I think FD needs to find a way of bringing them together. Us PVE guys like blowing things up as well and I'm sure the folks who like to focus on pvp would enjoy actually finding someone to shoot for a change. It's just up to FD to find the right outlet.

If they had forced a PVP/PVE divide from the start, most of the ambivalent people would've picked PVE anyway (meaning Open wouldn't have a single more soul in sight), given how unforgiving dying can be and how imbalanced some fights are, while many of the solo-only people like me wouldn't even have bought the game in the first place.

You just can't reconcile all of Elite's playerbase under one ruleset, and reducing the amount of available options would be a very dangerous decision for FD to make.

I mean, of course, making the whole deal more fun and engaging and whatnot won't ever be a wasted effort, but you shouldn't do it if all you want to achieve is to bring more people to multiplayer.

[Edit] : In other words, multiplayer isin't something that should be forced by toying with connexnio/mode options, that would be a waste of time. If FD wants to make MP more interesting, they have to make socializing a much deeper and better experience (guilds/groups, pan-galactic chat channels, broadcasted powerplay events) and weave Multiplayer in every aspect (exploration, mining, piracy, trading) in a way that's convenient. Also, of course, complexifying the consequences of death and making them a truckload less arbitrary (as in, not just simply losing a week's worth of credits every time your Cutter gets blown up, no matter the cause) would go a long way, too. It's all about making the game in itself more rich and enjoyable. Anything else is just a sterile debate about who gets to decide where we put fences between whom, and that won't produce anything good.

We'll never know if the game would have been backed if they had not.

That's PvE players engaging in PvP - not PvE. Some players, the majority apparently, don't engage in PvP.

Absolutely, a kind of "official Möbius" as well as all the existing options. It is clear from the huge numbers Möbius attracts that there is a big demand for this.

I like the thrill of Open every now and then (but it requires my full attention), and I'll sometimes go Solo too (mainly if a BH CG has got so busy that kill stealing is an issue, or I know I only have 15 minutes and want to avoid social interaction to 'get something done'). But 90% of the time I'm in Möbius.

There has been a suggestion that the status quo (with Möbius) is fine, however there are issues. There is a huge management job splitting and recreating the groups because they fill up. Players are also restricted to one of the geographic groups. This means that my group's Americas players join the Eurasian group so they can play cooperatively with the majority who are Europe based. This has the side effect that they don't see many other players online at the normal US leisure time slots.
