Flag your colours: Add faction (naval) rank to Commander ID
Hello community,
I really like the background lore about the cold war between the Feds and the Imps. To get more personally involved in this endlessly unravelling conflict I would love to be able to openly display my chosen major faction and the naval rank I hold.
So instead of a scanning ID reading:
Commander Haggis McMoose
mostly drunk
clean since 8 a.m.
I would love to read:
Lieutenant Haggis McMoose
His Imperial Majesty's Navy
almost sober
presumably clean within the hour
...together with the shiny AQUILA IMPERIALIS next to my unworthy name
Now that would be a great little addition helping game immersion and recognizing your brothers-in-arms (just add the little eagle on the contacts tab next to the name)... But my suggestion does not focus on fluff alone:
Say a group of players wants to maintain a siege on a station or system. At the moment there is no way to give credentials to the siege party so they can see that I'm on their side and the cargo in my ship's belly won't go to the wrong faction on the station or in the system. Buuut if I can show an exemplary imperial blockade squadron my officer's ID those problems vanish. It even makes sense in the game world. If you hold a certain navy rank, you should get some IFF transponder codes identifying you as an allied craft.
The only prerequisite for this mechanic to work would be mutually exclusive naval careers with the major factions (which makes perfect sense, you don't allow your own soldiers to work for the enemy as well -> A Fed that gets a relevant rank with the Imps is no longer a Fed, probably no longer "clean" in Fed space and maybe no longer alive). So gaining a rank in one navy while you hold one in the other should make you lose your original rank, a good deal of reputation and get you a decent bounty on your head... "Nobody likes traitors, make an example of the little maggot!"
What are your thoughts on the subject? Any other people here with the wish to fly their colours?
