because a video will tell you more than words :

i have been dreaming about this for a long time and i was pleased to discover it does already exist.

a huge universe you can attack from air, ground, seas ans space.
Everything linked : diplomacy, spy, research, strategic, tactic, politic, economy gestion, cities building and crushing, politic,FPS and war vehicles driving !

With an Elite Dangerous background !

Waow , Santas Claus , i swear i would make EVERYTHING you want ,if you make my wish come true !

****
please do "+1" if you want developpers to work on it (in futur mod or extension may be?)

I think it's just a matter of time, once Frontier has the Universe and space flight up and running they just need to work on procedural terrain and characters within ED and they will have the building blocks needed to make planet and space based troop combat.

Both character control and landing on planets have been mentioned as post release goals they plan on aiming for.

But first up they need a successful launch of ED.

Eventually you will be able to get up and walk around your own and others' ships and space stations. Some kind if fps is a natural extension of that. It isn't something you will see at launch though.

Looks great and I'm fairly sure Frontier have something similar in mind for the future.

My problem with EVE is EVE. Tried it and was put off by many aspects. I would not eagerly dip my toe in those waters again. It does look good though (dont like the boots) ;)

But first up they need a successful launch of ED.

As long as Frontier keeps all their future goes, even possible ones, in view, and create their games according to it - like they do, at the moment (full 3d ship interiors etc.), they could pull all that off.

CCP's problem is, they didn't plan for such things from the get go, and now they are struggling to make their vision working... personally, I will not hold my breath for a unified EVE/DUST/Valkyrie game... not by them, at least.

Yea, and EVE's problem is EVE... simple as that. ;)

i was not talking about EVE itself , but the idea of integration of a DUST's like .
I found EVE very hard to manage with his complex gameplay.

look at Frontier Elite 2 , it's easy to play.Battlefield 3 , it 's easy to play.
Idem for simCity or Rome Total War.

I think it's not impossible to mix all this in ONE universe .
But it must take time for developpers to make it and to balance for something stable and funny .
Kickstarter paiment system is the opportunity to hold on for a while , and give time
for the team to make a good and powerfull Foundation which make everything possible for future addons (free? not expansive?) or Mods ( ;-) ) .
They told us it's about a fantastic SandBox ? I want to see this !

Personally I thought Dust 514 looked like a tacky bolt-on to the EvE universe, and would really hope that Frontier didn't do it that way at all. I'm really hopeful that the first person section can be made seamless in terms of gameplay. Like GTA has you seamlessly moving from your feet into cars and planes, I hope Elite can have us seamlessly stepping out of space-ships and walking around in spacestations and on planets.

Please note that video came out in 2011 and how the mechanics are in Eve. I don't think they will get any thing better then what they have now. Players are not going to be willing to change what they have now. You know Stuff like Click to change direction. Also people are not going to accept FPS. My guess it will be more like MMO where you click a target and shoot.

I don't see what relevancy FPS style gameplay will have in the Elite universe. Same for EVE actually - the video itself shows how useless ground troops are. Certainly wandering about stations will be nice, and there may be opportunities for some interesting FPS gameplay, but it will (and should) feel powerless compared to flying a ship.

The fact that some players enjoy having a rich background for some FPS activities does not disturb player who only want to stay in their space ships.
There is not contradiction.
I enjoy several kind of games , but having one universe which can unify all this fun must be great.

If you are afraid to have a 14 years old invasion on the server , there will be mecanism to kick them , or place them far from you i think.

The interest is to have ships vs ships AND ships vs Planets .
Imagine one planet between 2 others one belonging to rival factions.
Each Faction Mother Planet send vast armies across space , with soldiers and Mechwariors and jeeps... inside the Troop Transporter escorted by Fregates and Cruiser.

It gives space battle around the PromisedLand , and hard fighting (like Battlefield 3) at ground on this planet . Ships give orbital strike and respawn sky diving .
Soldiers can take military structure , in order to place or improve DCA ...

When the planets "belongs" to you , you have to rule it with galactic commerce and politic ... and to protect it and his space roads !

We're getting the ability to walk around and outside of our ships in an upcoming expansion after release, no doubt this discussion or ones similar to it will come up again, although this time we'll be more versed on how Elite runs at that stage.

I imagine on a distant planet a scientific research center devastated by monstrous creatures. My commander in FPS mode will enter in the center for to kill these creatures. Yes here I am again in DOOM. I joke

Personally I would like to when they will allow walking on planets and space ships and stations, for FD main focus would be - give us some tools, give us some rules, give us weapons, and let us do whatever we want (yeah, more like GTA style). They can create nice side activies, which would increase our ratings, or else, but in essential it would be extension on what we do in space - exploring, mining, assassinations, etc (although some new activities like hunting would arise).

Anyway, more I think about it, more I respect FD for making not that easy decision not to do landings at first version. It will be like fully additional game expanding on ED.

I spent years playing Eve. Sank hundreds of hours into it. Excellent game. I played Dust 514 for 30 minutes and I never went back. It's a nice (but obvious) idea, and it seems to have gained some traction with players. Execution is the key I suppose. The idea has been out there forever, the trick is making it happen in a way that doesn't... well suck.

may be they failed due to :
1-insufficient achievement of the FPS side
2-FPS mode should not be perpetual , but should need a critical mass of fighters presence to be really interessant
3-the two parts : EVE / DUST 514 were indirectly connected but it was 2 dimension bad melted
4-DUST was thought in order to serve EVE , but as it didn't help itself , it failed to help EVE.
5-the time and space dilution of diffuse and perpetual fights are not a good idea.
==> we want huge wars , not soporific scattered guerillas.

I agree DUST failed , but the basis idea is great ! Default can be fixed !

I don't understand people saying "Dust failed , so you have to forget this concept".
We should try to find what was wrong with Dust , because this part can enrich your experience .

It could give a chess-like side with battleships moving in a solar system , to capture planet , one after one ! So you would think about galactic commercial roads and think about : what's the next star to conquer ?!

I find it more interessant that just sailing throught wormshole , and fighting from one independant and isolated place to one other similar (just scenario background changes).

4-DUST was thought in order to serve EVE , but as it didn't help itself , it failed to help EVE.

I haven't played EVE or DUST, but this sounds like every spin-off project ever created - having to maintain two projects and a meaningful connection between them triples the complexity of the whole endeavour. Many would say the exact same thing about e.g. Windows and Office - Office was tied to Windows to help Windows, but as that made it harder to put Office on tablets/phones/etc., it's now failing to help Windows.

In technical terms, the tight coupling creates a conflict of interest. The solution is to give each product to two different companies that are free to maintain the link, drop it, sell access to third parties, or whatever else is in their business interest.

Well, sadly CCP has always learned the wrong lessons from their failures... the Incarna expansion (introduction of basic avatar game play) failed because of the new, very expensive cash shop, still they conceived it as "avatar centered game play has failed"... DUST failed because it is to removed from EVE (and a console game, of all things!), and they, again don't see the real problems...

I do hope and pray that FD will make this work one day... they surely have examples to look at for how it shouldn't be done. ;)

I just hope that eventually is not EVE's eventually. This ability promised soon after release in 2003 with EVE STILL hasn't been implemented properly. (They have your captain's quarters, but that's it, no walking around space stations, no bars, no running into other people). DUST is different, it's a seperate game within the same universe. Your pilot can't join a DUST squad and attack the planet for example. Other than through bombardment.

...and that's where the big problem lies. CCP tried to open a new market by making DUST a console FPS... a bold, and stupid, move. Meanwhile, we capsuleers (pilots in the EVE universe) got some new/rebalanced ships and a stupid hacking minigame.

Everyone knew Dust was going to flop. They made the stupid mistake of making it a console game when Eve is a PC game. So most of their target audience had no access to the game...

Anyway, you should look at Planetside 2 for very large scale FPS combat on seamless terrain, with aircraft, ground vehicles and infantry. Something like that along side a space game would be even more epic :)
