Add friends from PC version

Hi ,

Is it possible to add PC players to the current Xbox, CQC or Full game as Friends? I can't find the button to allow me to search for their names?

Xbox One differences

I own the PC and Xbox One versions of ED. I purchased another Xbox One version of ED for my Brother. When you both are logged in as "friends" on Xbox Live and own ED, you will be able to see each other within the realm of ED on Xbox One. You can set beacons and Wing up, if you are in Open. You will not be able to play together in Solo mode, since there is no ability to create a Group at this point. At any rate this is what I have found to be true so far. Hope this helps you Sir. Godspeed and Fly Safe Commander.

Xbox and PC players share a universe, but we can't interact with each other in any meaningful way. We can fight in the same battles, undermine the same systems, but we're on different networks

Thanks for the answers. Hopefully this will change once the xbox version gets out of preview.

It won't. Xbox and PC players will not get to fly with or against each other. The only thing being shared is the database for markets, exploration, Powerplay and presumably the shipyard and outfitting. Maybe, one day, we will have true cross-play but not for any foreseeable future.

Shame. Is there any official statement on this, I wonder if its a Microsoft Xbox (legal?) imposed restriction.

XBL is a subscription service and for cross-play to happen, PC players would be accessing it for nothing

A guess that depends on what data is stored in XBL. If the ship positions are in there then you are right, but if, like the galaxy state, they are stored in FD's servers, then why do the PC's need to access XBL?

I'm guessing it would be part of the licensing EULA Frontier will have agreed to to publish games on Xbox

The answer to the OP's question would be NO. None of the other multi-plat games out there allow this including GTA 5 which considering its popularity and the size of the development team on that game would offer this if it were possible.

XBL is a CLOSED network, and MS is very protective of their members. That encompasses a whole host of issues including security.

So again... This is not something I would expect to ever see in ED. And it has really nothing to do with Frontier and their wishes. It all falls within the realm of Xbox Live and MS's policy of maintaining a closed network, only accessible if you are a member of XBL.

Even if it were possible, what would be the point of having people on your friends list that you can't actually get into an ED session with? FD has already stated that Cross-Play isn't going to happen. That likely comes down to the simple fact that the playing fields between the PC ad XB1 versions are not level.

Whether it be the superior control options for the PC and Mac versions like HOTAS sticks, pedals and other peripherals, to the raw performance advantages of the PC and Mac hardware. I really don't know why anyone on the XB1 would want to have players with all of these advantages playing in their game sessions and shooting at them! lol!

The great thing about the XB1 version over the PC and Mac versions is the fact that everyone is on the same page, so no one truly has an advantage in terms of hardware. Differences in internet connection speeds and stuff like that are enough to tilt the outcome of a PvP to the player with the better connection, so imagine if that player also had a HOTAS controller, multiple displays and a top end PC capable of running the game at a locked 60fps regardless of how many ships were involved in a battle.

Not being hindered by extreme lag while everyone else around you is, would definitely give you the upper hand.

Although PC an XBox players cannot interact, I wonder if it would eventually be possible for someone who has both the PC and XBox versions to switch between the two? I have a friend who plays on a Mac who likes the idea of playing on XBox, but doesn't want to have to grind his way up from a Sidewinder again.

Obviously, when playing on XBox you couldn't interact with those still on PC (and vice-versa).

Maybe even a one-off import in a similar way to the way we will be shifted when XBox goes live. It would certainly attract more PC players to XBox and result in a lot more sales of the full game.

As others have said, personally I wouldn't want to be up against PC players who have access to full keyboards (with shortcuts etc), voice attack, hotas setups, rudder pedals, head tracking etc etc etc......using the XBone controller against that lot is like fighting with your hands tied behind your back.

I realise not all PC players have access to all the devices I mention, but even if they just have a keyboard/mouse/gamepad setup - they can still easily do shortcuts etc that we simply can't do on the xbox. Simple things like using an SCB or chaff without having to be assigned to a fire group - easy on PC, impossible on Xbox=big disadvantage in a scrap...

I can see a definite attraction for being able to use the same Commander/save between the two versions (not simultaneously, obviously), would imagine that technically it's possible seeing as everything is stored at Frontier - guess there are reasons why they don't do that, not sure if it's possible between the MAC/PC version currently?

Although I realise it's a completely different kettle of fish...Fable legends managed the cross platform gaming experience though... with Microsofts blessing, since it's one of their flagship in-house titles...

GG7 won't have seen that I answered that already; he's blocked me like a big girl's blouse
Me Too! It's a rite of passage in our group. Mine came from criticizing his use of CAPS lock ALL the TIME.

I think XBL may have been closed in the past but recent announcements suggest otherwise: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/windows-10. Specifically "now you can play and connect with gamers across Xbox One and Windows 10 devices." However it seems that FD don't want to be restricted when it comes to updates/patches, so it seems this is an FD decision: http://wccftech.com/elite-dangerous-crossplay-challenges-highlighted/
This is true. During one of the AMAs or forum threads they essentially said as much. They don't want to have PC and Xbox playing on different versions against each other and they don't want PC being held back by the certification process of Microsoft for XBL.

World of Tanks does the same between 360 and Xbone. There should be more of this coming with the Win10 based update for Xbone coming and with the addition of the XBL app on Win10. If it hasn't come already (I haven't PC gamed in 15 years) I see the coming of an API for games on PC to use the XBL service for matchmaking, friends lists, and communication as highly possible and more cross play in the future.

Makes me wonder is that, All this talk about how crossplay between systems is difficult. How is it games like World of Tanks, Warframe, War Thunder (Yes it's PS3/PS4 but still matters) and a few other games here and there have this ability. I know it may be up in M$s' control, or FD doesn't have the ability to or the such. But still brings up a very valid point that are/were games of next and previous gen systems that does do this. Another one off the top of my head is Defiance (PS3,PC,X360).

Even makes me scratch my head even more. Is the fact that ED will be released on PS4 in time. So can be a way to capitalize on a open market with this if it ever became a true vision of the company. Crossplay between systems could definitely be something good for ED. But I'm not holding my breath. With out this feature, it still doesn't detract from such an amazing game ED truly is.

What would the point of that even be? You can't talk to them through the game, you can't play with them, you can't see them.
