Newcomer / Intro Adder of Viper?

I've been playing since launch on and off (family and games don't mix well) and I've finally got roughly enough money to buy a Viper.

The problem is I am in Eranin, and I want to I think head towards Imperial space because that's seems to be where the action is.

The Viper only has according to the Wiki a 4LY jump range, which even compared to the Eagle I got with the Merc Edition is kind'a pitiful. I'm not even sure if I buy the Viper where I currently am I would even be able to make it to Imperial SPace (I was tempted to mount a fuel scoop for the journey)

The Adder has an excellent jump range, decent cargo and two hard-points. I'm thinking of doing mostly bounty hunting NPCs, combat zones and maybe a little trading on the side till I can afford in the maybe-future a Cobra III.

So to bring point to my long-winded question, should I go ahead and get an Adder and give it some slightly higher-end gimbled weapons? Or should I wait, make the treck towards Sorbago (which I beleive is about 160 LY from Eranin) where apparently the current hot spot is for the Imperials and then buy a Viper there?

To OP, the wiki is a bit wrong.

The Adder has 3 hard points, has about a 10 ly jump range stock but can get up to about 18 with upgrades. It can be modified to hold 12 cargo pretty easily and 16 or more with a shield downgrade. This is with both a discovery scanner and a fuel scoop. Great for exploring, light trading and doing missions. It can also fight so not bad for killing the smaller ships (I killed an Asp!)

The Viper has a jump range of 8 or 9 ly stock, not 4. This isn't quite enough for long trips so you will need an upgrade or to dump some mass by upgrading to lighter modules (or selling your weapons). It has 4 hard points, is faster and more agile so is better for fighting. It can carry 8 cargo pretty easily and can be modified to hold more if you sacrifice utility modules like fuel scoop or discovery scanner.

So the choice is yours, Viper is a fun, fast fighter which will serve you well (and just wait till you hear the engine growl) while the Adder is like an upgraded Hauler, more combat capability and more utility with the same cargo capacity.

Torgrim, the Hauler is cheap, has only 1 hard point and is a great option to start making some cash from missions and trading. It has a good jump capacity stock and only gets better on upgrades.. However it's a bit lacking in utility slots having only 1 spare after cargo and shields so you're looking at either a fuel scoop or a discovery scanner. It's a great ship to upgrade from the Sidewinder to, but ultimately I think everything it does the Adder does better, but with a higher price point.

Hope it helps, willing to answer questions on these ships as I've flown them all quite a bit.

I upgraded from my Sidewinder to an Adder. The Adder has three hardpoints (two small ones and a medium one), while the Siderwinder only had two small ones. So the Adder makes it a bit easier to kill stuff.

The jump range of the Adder is the same for me (I had an FSD that costs about the same - 160k - on both.) It's around 16ly for both ships.

I like the Adder, and it does feel like an upgrade; extra cargo space and a bit more battle power. But I found one flaw with it: the cockpit is closed. You only see left and right. The top of the cockpit is closed and you can't see anything, which limits your ability to visually track objects around you. With the Sidewinder, I was able to inspect the environment just by looking around me.

I say Adder. I've changed an Adder for a Viper and I'm regretting it. First of all the combat mission mechanic is plain bad and going around searching for pirates (the one that don't get you a bounty on your head because they are just wanted for someone and clean for others, also in the same system it seems). Pirates, even if you don't have lot of problems, often give you poor bounties (not always but still), like you can barely repay munitions and fuel. Furthermore if you want to do navy missions you have to first get something very rare, a lot of ly away and probably prohibited (and with your viper you can just go in your backyard).
I'm actually thinking of buying back an Adder or simply quit until they fix the combat missions (if they do so).

Thanks it helped alot have some rep :)

I currently have e (Fr)eagle that I dropped a fuel scoop on to get to Eranin because I *thought* the civil war was still happening there. Should I keep this set up and start schlepping over to Sorbago instead since that's the current hot-zone, *then* buy a viper/adder in that general area?
