Newcomer / Intro addicted already....!!!!

I love this game so much...
if you are new to elite like me then don't judge the game too harshly in its first couple of weeks. as the beta was soo small in comparison to having the game released online. that it would of been difficult to judge which issues needed fixing first...

the devs have the game working great aside from these issues ive come across in my first 15 or so hours of gameplay.
---------------------------------------------------------
1. a crash on the last tutorial mission 'travel'... when you select galaxy and then click on a planet for details. the game crash's to desktop, not a game breaker. just reload the game and click start... good times...
----------------------------------------------------------
2.selecting hyper jump and not realising you could change the speed(this has people struggling to reach their destination).
I found I couldn't speed up to get closer to my destination when in hyperspeed. when I realised the mappings for speeding up and slowing down in this mode I definitely had a homer simpson moment, as it took 9 straight hours of scouring the web whilst playing to see if anyone else reported the issue. so that this way I could deduce if it was user error or not.
after 9 hours no one else had complained of the issue, and there were loads of people flying past me at high speeds. so it had to be possible.
i thought the other cmds must of upgraded their engines...doh!
until i finally thought to myself... what???? everyone's managed to get through this part of the game but me...!!!! no chance... so i started having another look through controls and there it was... the magical thrust up / thrust down setting... the one which works in hyper drive...so you can speed up and pass by other planets with ease!
i would of checked for bindings first.... only i didn't imagine i would need to have separate bindings for controlling the speed going forwards and backwards on top of the ones i had already set... my mistake though!!!!!
-----------------------------------------------------------
3. the mission event triggers are not working properly so you may arrive back at a station you took a mission from and find you cant give the item or take any items as the usual button is red as in unavailable... your only option is to abandon the missions that don't work until it gets fixed which wont take long at all.....as you cant play seriously when abandoning certain missions. as it has a negative effect on your stats in game....
-----------------------------------------------------------
#update1#4. the landing mechanic sometimes doesn't work and you are unable to use the land function which you use to guide yourself in. the actual graphical representation of your ship doesn't appear.
Workaround - if your running low on petrol just simply move away and stop your engines... when the timer runs out ask again for permission to land. dont wait to close to the landing pad or you will get a loitering fine. if there is a space, your wish to land will be granted.
re approach keeping the small command tower (if there is one) in front of you.

as you approach the dead centre you will be pulled in by the landing mechanism automatically. if this doesn't happen and you find yourself in the same situation as before. just rinse and repeat. eventually the game mechanic will work. unfortunately I just learnt this this the hard way...

time to start again I think.... this time im not going to be beaten by the fuel system... I'd of bought a scoop but I wanted to finish the cargo missions I had first before I exchanged the cargo hold for the energy scoop...

this time im gonna kick everyones buttox.... no not really im just joking... lol
So my advice if you are new is not take it too seriously and use this time we have waiting for the fix on exploring other regions and concentrating on areas of the game which work well like pvp etc...
This is why i love the game!!!!!! its only on day two and even though i spent hours watching the distance between me and the next planet shortening to 25days then shooting back to 1yr and the original distance... until i learnt to use the scoop for collecting energy from the sun. i would constantly run out.
so i had a bad-if-not the worst start and i still love the game. i need sleep, food and money(and the other thing with the missis)... otherwise I'd never leave the elite dangerous universe. IMO its that good... and from what ive seen im confident once the games polished it will be another classic... like the original...

this game has a great foundation... at this point with enough polish, they are going to create a masterpiece.
or will they do an EA..????

remember this is just imo... i will update a soon as any progress or work arounds have been found for the missions that are borked...

See you in space!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice post. Glad you like it as a new player. Being familiar with the concepts of Elite for 30 years tends to blur your (my) vision now and then :)
And then to think this is only the beginning...

I have to agree it's a triumph!

I think the mission terminals need to be sorted out so that they have plenty to choose from, as I spent several hours travelling around to try and find missions I could do or even eligible to do.

Perhaps a bit like Star War Galaxies? (Beginner, intermediate and Harder). But ensure there's always missions available. but other than that, it's great!

I wonder if we will eventually find remote systems with Alien tech?? which can be researched to allow us to build bigger and better ships?? Also ship building as a profession

Fantastic to hear a non-backer is having fun amongst the silly "Whingers vs Fanboys" battles going on in the forums! I backed the KS but only bought into the Beta because I was bored and waiting for GTAV on my PS4... since then I've splashed £200 on a new GPU and haven't played my PS4 since the Gamma was released; this game has drawn me back to my PC big time. I'm looking forward to seeing stuff added over the coming months, and in the meantime I have a shiny new Cobra to kit out!

See you around CMDR!

This post alone has given me some confidence in the game again, I also was really starting to get worried when I was seen planets and stations 1 year away! Took me some time to to realise the thrust for supercruise was a separate binding!

I'm still at the early stages of puzzling out what my purpose is in this universe but reading on the forums here has helped me get started.

Thanks to the assume community! (Apart from a small few arrogant fanboys and some ignorant whingers)

ive fallen asleep playing and woken up with my head on the desk... its that good...I did not want to stop playing even with the missions glitching out...

so ive just tried to log back in and theres another patch.... I bet this fixes the mission problem...

lets find out... :)

I agree with the OP, the game is hooking. I played Elite 2: Frontier for a stint, but found the controls a little too difficult to connect with properly. ED fixes that and makes the series so much better.

I also encountered a bug with one of training missions, however.
In the one where you're supposed to fight a tougher enemy in a small squadron the enemy can crash into an asteroid when you first load it, causing you to win within 10 seconds.
I had to restart the scenario the first 7 times I played it so that I could actually fight him.

Good game, though.

I'm still at the early stages of puzzling out what my purpose is in this universe...

Your purpose in the universe is whatever you wish it to be...

Want to be a simple trader, buying and selling, attacking only when attacked - you can.

Want to run missions, helping a faction or all factions - you can.

Want to bring bad guys to justice, hunting down bounties and selling the cargo their dead, lifeless hulls leave behind - you can.

Want to be on the other side of the law, preying on the unwary trader and selling their cargo for them for all the profits with none of the outlay - you can.

Gun runner - you can.

Drug smuggler - you can.

That is why I loved the original and that is why I have already fallen in love with this version.

brilliant reply Juby... I completely agree. the freedom and possabilities to have fun are endless... and you can always meet up with a few buddies and you've got yourself a squadron...

in fact that gives me an idea for a new monthly event.... they could call it squadron, and have it take the whole squad on a mission together.

squadrens could compete by keeping a leaderboard of the most successful team throughout that perticular scenario. lives saved etc.
with the two top scoring squadrens both given a single item in a far off galaxy that is first one to get their gets the epic gun or other cool ship accessory like a decal that says in psuado blood and bullet holes 'top gun' or bad ass.
and make it so only one ship gets the upgrade out of the team. so that there is a reason to keep competing each month...

I'd love to work in the dev team making events like this...
