Adding a story line to the game . . .

Would that technically be possible you think?
Obviously it would be done by an external website or something.

A storyline could go something like this:
  • You finally got your pilots license and are eager to fly back to your family in their home system
  • Where the cooperative is saving up to get their first FC.
  • But after leaving the sandbox, you hear that their money is stolen
  • They have been overthrown by a brutal dictatorship
  • There's money on your head
Your mission
  • Don't get caught, get around using low security and anarchy systems only.
  • Find out what happened.
  • Make money to replace the stolen money.
  • Get your cooperative back in charge of your home system.
The question is not about the storyline, that's just an example.
The question is: is it technically possible to do that? And how?

Sounds a bit like the personal story lines that you get with your characters in Guild Wars II. I really enjoy those. It adds a bit of personalization. I like your idea!

I doubt any personal story lines like that fits in with the "blaze your own trail" theme FDev uses.

But there several places in the game that could use a story line... take Federation and Imperial ranks, these are today based purely on reputation from doing mission for them, so doing mission that gives extra reputation is then obviously better...

What if we instead had a story line, where you did something like you suggests here, go thre, do this, help out there, etc, and while you do this, you get told the story of Federation and Empire, and their sides of their conflicts in the pasts etc. You unlock system permits, why not let you use these new permits by having you visiting and doing things those newly unlocked systems...

This would stop player from blazing their own trial, they would learn lore and if you do both, Empire and Federation, you get to have some conflicting view of the same situation.

The other thing where this could be used, is all the Powerplay weapons and module. So you get to do some stuff, and get told the story how this powerplay item came to be, and why.. get the some nice story, and once completed, you have access to a new item.

And it is quite possible that the frameweork the used for the training missions could be used for this.

So you can still go on your own path and totally ignore all the power play items and Federation/Imperial ships, etc, if you like, and if you decide to go after any of those things, you could learn some interesting lore about things you try to get access to!

And leave the personal narrative of your pilot to be your own imagination, or simply ignore it if that is what suites your best, when you blaze your own path doing what you like.

An interesting idea.

I don't see why this could not be done via an extension of some of the excellent 3rd party tools for ED - ( similar to the way that voice attack adds adds tours).

Just need to read the player logs and award a suitable medal for completion. There could be a range of "stories" and could be chosen by the player.

Wouldn't want to see it "in game", but in another application it could be fun to try a few out just as a series of extended missions?

OP, I think EDMC using a Canonn plug-in will give missions to do. There is a storyline going on at the Canonn website.

Could you point me in the right direction?

Well nothing is stopping you creating an external website or something.
Yes there is.

OP, it sounds like a couple story lines which have already been made on YouTube. Google it.

story campaigns tend to be in the Single player mode of games
Elite D has the multi mission starter mission.
News eevnts provide meta stories and powerplays and CGs . The Orginal Elite had the Dark wheel novella frame your activities.
People create reason in there head why thy devote there life to grind.

OP, I read your first post a little too hastily earlier.

After reading it again, I see you're not talking about a particular story, but maybe a method of guiding the user through the game, more than Frontier has, via a third party site.

I like the idea, but what I would like even more is a better, more multi-step mission system in Elite Dangerous.

Have a look at Drew Wagar's Retribution series.
It's not perfect, but an interesting experiment.
You need someone to "DM" and guide the story, but if you have enough people willing to RP with you then it could work.

I'd rather live by my own character.
