Adding another layer of protection, so you don't accidentally sell your ship

It came to me that other CMDRS have had this issue in the past and that it was really devastating for them because their ships were engineered. And engineering is really something that takes alot of patience and hard work. I am talking with personal experience because I am currently engineering an Alliance Chieftain all the way.
Anyways, I think adding a button with a lock icon next to the ''sell ship'' option would be a great idea. When you aren't really looking to sell any ships you can press that button and the ''sell ship'' option will become gray and it won't be able to be interacted with unless the CMDR presses the lock button again. This way CMDR's will not be sweating when trying to change ships and becoming comandos trying to not press the ''sell ship'' button. I know that it already has a confirmation option about selling the ship but if a CMDR is in a hurry he might double press that aswell.

I think it will be a great addition to the game and I hope you give my suggestion some consideration.

How about someone to hold your hand as well? Seriously? How many attempts do you want to NOT sell your ship exactly? If you read twice and press once this shouldn’t happen 🤦🏻‍♂️

Yeah, that's probably why they made modified weapons can't be sold at all. thanks!

We are talking about Engineered ships. These can take a long time to be build. And with 2 clicks they are gone. On top of that other CMDRS are still experiencing this issue. So its not like it doesn't exist. I already mentioned that the CMDR might be in a hurry and he shouldn't have to worry about selling his 2.000+ hour ship build. I don't see the problem with making the ''selling ship'' option uninteractable for those who don't have the intentions of selling a ship.

They don’t have to worry. SLOW down. It’s really that simple. If you can’t navigate a menu how are you expected to pilot a ship?? Seriously??

Ok, tell me. Whats the problem with adding this suggestion? What do you lose from this? Please take your time.
Nothing. But why the need to nanny people. My point still stands. It’s a complex game with complex game mechanics. If you can handle that, where’s the problem exactly?? What next? Have anti crash feature in case CMDR is rushing to land and hits a star port and doesn’t want to pay the rebuy cost? Where does it end? Would you like to sell your ship? Are you sure? No but really, are you sure? Really? Really really sure? Last chance?

Adding a lock mechanic is 1 click. So you won't need to be spammed with messages.
Second, people are still experiencing this issue. So why do they have to be left out? If you don't want the lock mechanic then you can just not press it. Simple as that, the game will still be the same for you. But for people that don't want to bother with that can just apply the lock mechanic. And their worries will be gone.
Selling an engineered ship is a devastation, crushing the ship and having to re-buy the ship is not. When something has such tremendous value it should not be taken lightly. And again you don't lose anything from this. You only gain the extra protection only if you want it.

And there will still be people who get it wrong and sell the wrong because they wanted to sell a ship, clicked unlock, clicked sell, clicked confirm and then realised they had the wrong ship selected for sale, so lets add a fourth check, something along the lines of "are you sure this is the right ship", then a fifth check in case someone misses that one etc.

Yes sorry that was sarcasm, I have never once sold the wrong ship or sold a ship I didn't mean to sell, or accidentally sold a ship or etc. You can only do so much to protect people then it starts to get silly.

True, but a lock system would atleast make people who are not interested in selling a ship feel more free when changing ships. Everytime I change ships either to get mats for engineers or to go explore I have to sit there sweating myself to death to not press the ''sell ship'' option. I use keybinds instead of the mouse and it can sometimes not cooperate with me. And sometimes you feel that thing ''call of the void'' but in video games. But with a lock mechanic that can also be prevented. My point is I don't want them to add more warnings because it will be pointless. But a lock system is something very secure that even other games use. The one that I can think on top of my head is Genshin Impact, you can lock some items you are not interested in selling and they cannot be sold until you press the lock button again. And that makes the user feel more safe and secure whilst also making him operate the menu faster without having to worry about losing his 2K+ hour progress. The worry is the thing that bothers people, the worry that their progress can be lost in 2 clicks. That the only thing seperating a 2K+ hour grind and frustration, disappointment and lost time is 2 clicks. Thankfully I haven't accidentally sold any of my ships but I have to always be on my toes while changing ships. When I operate a menu I am not thinking, I am in auto-pilot and I can guarantee that other CMDRS are also like this. But when the time has come to change ships I have to be there for the whole process.

What I am asking for is a lock system. Not a bunch of messages. If I am not interested in selling a ship then that means I am not.

It really doesn't matter how many locks, warnings, reminders etc you add, nature will always produce a better idiot to defeat them.

In other words it's fine as is (in my opinion). My coffee cup already tells me that coffee is hot...

Its not what has already been done. Its the thought that goes into it. Adding a lock mechanic will not 100% prevent people from accidentally selling their ship. But the main point of a lock mechanic is to make the CMDR feel more safe while browsing the menu. The CMDR wouldn't have to worry about selling his ship because he knows he presses the lock mechanic and that its impossible to screw up. So now he can change ships without a worry in the world. I am a ''What if'' kinda of person and even that 0.1% chance that I might sell my ship by accident still frightens me. Just what if I am not thinking at that moment and going into auto-pilot? Sure the lock mechanic will not protect everyone but it will be a great addition because it will ensure you mentally.

OP is the wrong solution. They should allow buyback of sold ships. Job done.

Maybe one day
Actually a good idea. This way you don't lose the engineered stuff. Good thinking CMDR. I would love for that mechanic to be implemented because it ensures you that if you mess up there is still a chance to buy your previous engineered ship.

When you sell an engineered module, you get a very clear warning that it's engineered. Then, if you do sell it by mistake, you can buy it back. When you sell an engineered ship you just get Confirm. That's it. And if you click on it by mistake the ship is gone for good, no warning,
This needs to be changed.

I fully agree something has to change on the ability to selling ships. And I also agree that a 2nd confirmation wont help.
I play Elite Dangerous since 2013 and never accidentally sold a ship. Since the new UI last year, I already sold accidentally 2 ships.

The first thing I observe is that, as soon you open the Manage your ships screen, you have to pass your mouse over the "Sell stored ships". Even the confirmation does not help because it is the same confirmation you get when you want to transfer a ship. If you just press 1 fraction too soon, you sold your ship.

If you move the button to a place where you can't accidentally click (on the top for example), then I'm 99% sure commanders dont sell their ship accidentally.
Maybe the graphic design is not optimal, but the usability is much better and safer.

Another option, is to buy back your ship, like you can do with modules. Its strange you can buy back a single (even un-engineered) module, while you cant buy back afully engineered ship with engineerd modules.

It's something you'll do once, learn from and never do again. Besides, I've heard if it's the first time you've done it, support will give it you back if you ask nicely, so I'm not seeing why this would need adding in.

I've also never accidentally sold a ship in over 4 years, although buyback as happens with modules would probably make sense.

Yes, the buyback would be really cool and if you beleive it or not, I already did it twice and beleive me, if you play 4 hours/day and are doing mass engineering of many ships (and hence switching ships constantly), the chance you sell accidentally with the new Manage Ship UI in Odyssey is for sure bigger than 0. I expect you are still talking about the horizons interface? Because that one did not change the last 4 years...

But the main point of a lock mechanic is to make the CMDR feel more safe while browsing the menu.

I don't feel unsafe browsing the menu, but then from my experience in IT and the number of people I have encountered that just press ok/ok/ok at whatever pops because they think they are doing what they want to do and all these double annoying popups are unnecessary and they should just go away is amazing. 99% of the problems is caused by people not reading the labels, warning, popups and what have you that tell them what they are doing and asking should they be doing it. The more popups you insert into the process, the more people will get annoyed and the more people will click ok/ok/ok without looking. The reason for this is because they absolutely believe they are doing what they want to do and no automatic popups will stop them, they've seen them all before.

As suggested already, allow buyback of ships sold, or change the way the popup works, instead of just ok have a box that requires them to type the serial number or name of the ship they are selling, that will stop it almost completely, because then people have to look at stuff and think about what they are doing!
