Currently we have just a bunch of individual NPCs flying around aimlessly.
How about adding some NPC commercial companies with their own brightly painted ships and decals into the game.
Here are some examples…
Global Transport (e.g. StarEx, Space Direct, etc.)
Their ships (Haulers, Type 6s, etc) would be painted in a particular color with a big logo. Providing transport services for systems and providing jobs to NPC characters.
Fast Food (e.g. Cosmic Chicken, Star Burger)
Ships with a chicken decal, etc. We would see these ships picking up food stuffs from agricultural systems and delivering to high-population planets.
Banks (e.g. Lave National Bank, Eranin First Bank, etc.)
Heavily armored ships full of gold with Security escorts.
Mining (e.g. NovaGold, Mine International)
Ships transporting raw materials to high-tech systems.
Humanitarian (e.g Red Cross)
Ships providing humanitarian assistance to struggling systems.
Criminal
Instead of hundreds of minor factions, have one or two global criminal organizations aligned with the Federation, Empire, Alliance, etc.
They would give the NPCs an actual purpose in the game and the trading back and forth from these companies/organizations would create a dynamic economy with systems. This would add a lot of richness to the background simulation.
Moreover they would provide more variety to the bulletin board (instead of just factions I couldn’t care less about!) and would create a lot of interesting missions.
