Adding some life to outside of stations

In a lot of the concept artwork the starports always look quite busy. I know in game there are patrols and NPC traffic coming or going - but could this be increased?

Also, it's great when there are sometimes big capital ship building docks right outside. Is there anyway that most popular starports can be like a hub of structures instead of always so singular and solitary?

Just asking! :)

The biggest problem here: if you were to put in an appropriate level of ship traffic (like a major airport services today) it would result in the stupid station design (one mailslot for everything) causing a massive traffic jam. Even with automated launch/landing there would begin to be multi-minute waits to get in and out of the queue.

One wonders why cargo transfer and vessel servicing would need docking with the rotating/gravity portion of a station, anyhow. There should be parking/docking facilities that are nearby and not part of the main station. Which would make a hell of a lot more sense in terms of smuggling, since a station with a single egress would simply scan every ship on approach to the slot or exiting the slot. A busy, chaotic, loosely patrolled tertiary docking area a Km or two away from the station with service from tugs/shuttles would make perfect sense in this context.

Hopefully some day the core team will get over their nostalgia for the single mailslot station design and start creating infrastructure that makes actual sense.

ELITE had occasional shuttles moving between station and planet. That would be a nice addition.

There could also be maintenance drones flying around the surface structure, or drones shuttling cargo and parts between station and orbiting megaships or building docks.

Whole heartetdly agree. Couple of mega ships here and there, shuttles, shipyards etc. Also on planets, would love to see some NPC SRV's and variations thereof, particularly at outposts and large bases.

I'd love to see a coriolis with with a mailslot on every side. Maybe only in major systems , headquartes that sort of thing. Have it twice the size and three times more traffic.

You could - and it was boring!

Frontier Developments must hear the demands of the community: Give us back our boring options that we won't use except once, then realize what a terrible mistake we've made!

Actually, the best part about Frontier Elite 2 was buying a Panther Clipper, loading it up with max shields, and then never bothering to try to shoot any attackers as they'd simply accidentally ram you and explode themselves due to the AI not realizing when it had to pull up out of an attack run. Aaaaaahhhh, the good old days.

I was being nostalgic rather than recommending as a priority feature. Some NPC shuttles would add a bit of life to systems and ports. But overall I’d be keener to see other big structures in close proximity to stations and NPC SRVs on planets.

Yes, yes and yes. More large structures around stations, make em feel like the bustling metropolises they are. There's something solemn about seeing that lonely dice floating in space, alone... Also I would really like an open mega station of sorts, with many modules that all have their own docking ports. Kinda like the citadel from mass effect, but still something with a unique twist. But yes, more life and more structures around stations. It would be fun to go look at stuff around em.

Maybe 2 mega ships in teh same instance as the station, but there are missions (wing like) where you have to transfer 5000 tonnes of something to the other ship. ie. traffic is mostly between Mega ships and not into Station?

Or that teh ships are 20 km apart, and outside the no fire zone bad things can happen??

Can only echo what's already been said, but I'd like to see this too. Even Elite 2 had massive trade ships outside some of the busier stations. They didn't actually do anything except sit there, but just seeing them made the area seem more alive.

Remember these:

I am for adding life to starports. I would prefer "life" be traffic related to an underlying functional economy, matched to the dominant industries. As a solo player, I have plenty of GPU for background activity.

heck there needs to be more life in a huge amount of places. One thing that has always bothered me was I was in a system with a massive amount of people, yet only 10 people in the entire system seemed to have ships flying around... lol... Yes I know they spawn in blah blah blah, but it still looks "dead" everywhere you go...

Seconded. Especially in large-population systems and rich starports.

The game has the “big empty” thing down. But it would be even more effective if juxtaposed against bustling, busy places at the core of civilization.

Agree with OP, i posted something of the same months ago, space in elite is surprisingly empty, much like the galaxy, the entire game feels like a football pitch with a tennis ball in the centre thats the content in the game, Frontier you have all this galaxy please fill IT...

Like the installations? Too bad you cant dock at those. Hopefully they will open up soon enough. I agree with the notion that there needs to be more life surrounding stations. Maybe not all the stations but the stations in capital systems, permit locked systems and other major hubs should definitely have more life to them.
