Adjust distance of on foot in VR "Screen"

I understand the difficulty of making a VR on foot and am fine with the flat 2d screen when I get out of my ship. However, it is so "in the face" it makes my VR Nausea even worse than actually being in a full VR environment. Could we have a way to "back up" from the virtual monitor so it's not like sitting a few feet from a big screen TV? I think that would vastly improve the experience when jumping out of a ship and going on foot without having to take the headset on and off.
