ADS confusion!!

Hello,

Having recently bought my first ADS; I was excited at the prospect of recording everything in a given system. But, as I push further & further away from the bubble the 'bit of kit' they sold me regularly reports higher numbers of bodies than I can actually see and subsequently scan.
Is this a bug, or am I missing something??

i don`t have much XP with exploration but i noticed that some systems are a few hundred thousand LS wide past the point where you can see the bodys and some ADS have unlimited range so you could be picking up those distant bodys.

Nope, it just has an infinite range, which should be able to scan the whole galaxy and beyond, so that is twice, the sellers can be done under the trades description act.

I said earlier today, if it costs over a million credits, it should scan everything, but it doesn't. maybe one day they will offer an all in one scanner?

What Kerrash said. The total number of bodies it reports contains the asteroids. Also note that in the system map you only see the first asteroid cluster but that is not all there is. If you look at your navigation menu you will see all the asteroid bodies your scanner picked up. What I do is set a filter to exclude the asteroid clusters from the navigation pane because their worth is 0 CR when you sell cartographic data. Finally, I suggest that you target the scannable system bodies using the navigation panel as it lists the bodies in ascending distance, which means it can give you a somewhat optimal route for approaching all of them if you wish to scan them all. Otherwise you can cherry pick from the system map.

And to expand a little on what Cmdr's Rhea Lorell and Kerrash have said, there can be many asteroid bodies to scan (but worth 0 credits) but they generally show as a single belt in the System map; perhaps that is the confusion?

Aaah, I'd spotted the 'Set Filters' some time back; but the 'penny' didn't drop.

Thanks to all for the super quick responses. Looks like my 'bit of kit' is just doing it's job!! Cheers all....

I am not sure i understand what is going on.

For instance i have both the ADS and DSC installed. When i first enter a system the scanner will report e.g. 48 bodies then goes down to say 25. These are systems where i will be the 'first discoverer'.

Why does the reduction occur? I can understand that asteroid belts are 'taken out' but why the other difference?

Thanks

You effectively get two scans. When you arrive near the star the initial 'show me what's in front of my face' scan happens automatically and will normally be 1 body (the star) but can also capture nearby bodies such as asteroids they're close enough (not sure what the limit is, 10 ls maybe?). Then you 'honk' and discover the rest.

System map at this time; [Note that 8 bodies found, but only 3 shown - means 6 are asteroids in that belt]

The honk;

and the system map after honk;

Quite often these two scans get out of sync and you'll get the result of the honk first which is why you get a large number then a small number (sometimes this means the honk is the true total as it 'got in' first). Other times it simply means there few bodies farther out - eg, if this system had only 9 total bodies then I would have seen 8, then the honk would give 1 more. (in this case you have to add the two number together to get the real total - this will be the case most of the time)

Hope that helps?

Yes thank you its much clearer now. I understand!

My logic says ship can show either X (passive scan) or Y (equipped scanner)or both. Always show x first (total A), then if Y (total B) is activated display total B after A but add A. Something like that. I am trying to figure out a way that
you would get a display of 22 objects.

It's a bit inconsistent....like the system map load time ;)

I jump and hit the honk right away. Gut feel......if the honk finishes before the passive scan then the honk should say 22 bodies.
If the honk finishes after the passive then I'll get an 8 and a 14 or occasionally a 14 and an 8 because the passive result got stuck somewhere in the network.

But that is so DISORGANISE (D) so you like it :D

Yes i get it now, but i seriously thought i was being 'done in' somehow. I was thinking why is there this deduction going on? I would count the planets and think geez. Maybe its network lag and i am getting less.

LOL moral of the story: don't be afraid to ask. Thank you once again for the images and explanation.
