Advanced Discovery Scanner

SO I was feeling flush today and purchased the advanced discovery scanner.

At the price of more than a few basic ships, this was an expensive piece of kit which I expect will not pay for itself very quickly. (It took quite a long time to pay off the surface scanner).

Any good hunting grounds for drive-by discovering?

any unexplored system $$ basically its unlimited range so those pesky stars 100000 LY off the nav point, u can now basically uncover everything in the system. Good for explorers, u can make it pay pretty quickly. Search systems close to civilsed space ( make sure u have enough credits to cover insureance - aas that will rise with all the bling items)

Yep I think I was up to 250k rebuild so it's going to hurt my wallet when I get blown up during my pew-pew.

My main thing is to remember to cash in the exploring data before going out and hunting wabbits.

I didn't take me long to get my money back, but I did use a Surface discovery scanner as well. Just jump in a system, ping the discovery scanner, ping the sun with the surface (this is for future reference if you can refuel here or not) and either a) move on, if you are in a rush. b) ping anything within 1000ls, don't bother with the rocky belts, then move on. Leave the stuff miles out, it is not usually worth bothering with.

Do not go exploring without the DSS and ADS. Just... don't. Until they release 2nd and 3rd level scanning and (hopefully) balance out the scanners vs cost vs payout a bit, the difference between exploring with those two and without is like the difference between space trucking in a Hauler and space trucking in a Type 7. I want to compare it to trucking in a Sidewinder vs Type 9, but I am unsure if that's a good comparison. Basically, seriously exploring without having both is just silly.

The usefulness for the ADS guarantees you will find everything you need to to pay it back. Even with a MDS, you will spend far too much time studying for parallax, and even then you'll still miss out on plenty of bodies. Basically, ADS cuts down the time so much that it is definitely worth the cost.

Just, be very careful not to die with 200k+ debt. A) when you die you lose all carto information you haven't sold. B) The debtor will buy your ADS for 77k. 1.5m purchase vs 77k to debtor. I was a dummy and died several times in a row with an ADS just after buying it.
