I had mine slam my new Explorer into the large habitat ring 3 times before I could get orientated and enough control to get far enough away. Took me down to 30% hull--thought I was going to have a rebuy my first day out! I always manually clear that ring on those stations now.
Personally, planetary, docking, and cruise assist should all be in the same module. You can easily turn off any features you don't want, but there's no reason basic navigation functions need to take up 3 slots (and these are all BASIC functions for the level of tech we're dealing with in this game). Pompous elitists can say what you will, but I'm not spending 5 minutes each dock getting my multi-million cr ship through a crowded base. Also, while I've learned to appreciate not using cruise assist, it's saved me so many times when I'm tired or get distracted looking things up during a jump (because you have to look up so much stuff on a separate device).
