Advanced v Intermediate discovery scanners

Having just splurged over 1 million credits on an Advanced scanner, I am gutted to find it does nothing different to my Intermediate scanner, the range seems the same, the rewards are certainly no greater.

Am I doing something wrong or have a been sold a pup by a secondhand car salesman?

Grrrr

The range at which they detect Astronomical Objects is much greater actually :)

Basic = 500 LS Range
Intermediate = 1,000 LS Range
Advanced = Entire System (Unlimited Range)

So it will save you from having to manually locate entities and get within 1,000 LS to pop them up. It won't make the actual scan itself go faster if that is what you mean, but trust me the unlimited range is well worth it since many can be over 30,000 LS apart :)

I hate to ask an obvious question, but I assume you have it assigned to a fire group and are holding it down to activate it right?

Hope this helps

Thanks for this, perhaps I have been lucky, or my playing style is such that I have never had issues in getting all the various umapped items, true I have had to hit the button a couple of more times in the past, but for the price I would have expected more.

The most I have ever got from scanning a system is about 12k and that was one of the first I found. The last one with 30 unmapped items only got me about 11k and that was after scanning them all, and taking 45 minutes.

C'est la vie, and aty least it doesn't take more power or add to the mass of the ship.

For maximum payout, aim for bigger stars. Systems with giant and supergiant stars pay better, also Gas giants with rings, metal-rich worlds etc. I've gotten upwards of 90K for some systems, but most are far less fungible. Your pay per hour will probably improve if you only spend time scanning interesting bodies, otherwise just scoop, scan, and move on.

There are systems with stuff that's hundreds of thousands of Ls from the main star. There's no way you'll find them without the advanced scanner - they are so far that they have no appreciable paralax when close to the main star.

Do you have a detailed surface scanner? It's not uncommon for me to get 20-50k for fairly large systems, and if you luck onto something notable like a terrestrial world, you can get over 100k for a system.

The scanner quality doesn't affect how well you scan planets or suns, only the range at which you can detect them. Don't forget to set up a trigger for the discovery scanner either - took me a while to figure that one out :).

It appears to me that the advanced scanner starts scanning from further away, except asteroids. Might be me falling asleep at the controls, but it did seam to start scanning earlier.

There are heaps of systems where objects (aditional suns etc) are tens or hundreds of thousands of LS away from your entry point. The 1,000 LS range of the intermediate scanner is actually pretty small.

The table below taken from here shows that 500 LS is almost exactly the distance from the Sun to the Earth, which is relatively small compared to the size of our solar system.

Code:
Planet Distance in AU Travel time
....................................................................
Mercury              0.387        193.0 seconds   or    3.2 minutes
Venus                0.723        360.0 seconds   or    6.0 minutes
Earth                1.000        499.0 seconds   or    8.3 minutes
Mars                 1.523        759.9 seconds   or   12.6 minutes
Jupiter              5.203       2595.0 seconds   or   43.2 minutes
Saturn               9.538       4759.0 seconds   or   79.3 minutes
Uranus              19.819       9575.0 seconds   or  159.6 minutes
Neptune             30.058      14998.0 seconds   or    4.1 hours
Pluto               39.440      19680.0 seconds   or    5.5 hours
....................................................................

Since I'm a poor explorer just traveling the outer rims, I routinely set a course outward to at least 100kLs before jumping to my next system. If I could afford this scanner, I would cream my nano-suit.

If you're not going Warp 10 (that's 1,000c), then you're not really scanning.

Best system I got so far was almost 30k.
