Advice for bounty hunting

Happy Christmas first of all.
So after making a couple of million just through trading and non-combat missions I've decide at getting into combat now.
Basically I just want a break from the trading and so I have parked my Cobra, bought a Viper and put about 750k of equipment into it.
Ive killed a couple of wanted so far but Its slow going.
So my question is
is there a better type of system to hunt in? (I'm in Sol right now)
what difference does the kill warrant scanner make and how do I use it. Do I have to target and fire it like a weapon?
any other tactics or advice from the experienced hunters here?

I fly without KWS and hunt in belts.
You have to "fire" and hold the KWS on the target (range and duration depends on KWS quality) it then reveal all bounties from all factions. Useful for hunting in anarchy systems, where you can shoot any and no one is shown as wanted.
If you want to hunt wanted ships, buy a FSD Interdictor to pull targets out of SC and/or try some belts for hunting grounds.

Most profitable thing to do in my experience is to go after those 150k+ missions who send you after Elite Anacondas. Aside from that, I usually just camp out at Nav Beacons and hope for juicy targets. Sometimes profitable, sometimes slow.

My best advice is to get at least friendly with the faction that provides the local security. That makes them, and everyone else associated with that faction green.

Then, get an interdiction thingy, scan and hunt down anything that flies around that is wanted and not green. Even better, fly into the Beacon near every systems' star, and farm everything in sight that isnt green. Good alternatives are Anarchy Resource Extraction areas, but a good range KWS is essential in this case.

General rule of thumb - bigger the quarry, bigger the bounty. Asp's can creep up to 50k if you have a KWS installed, Dropships et even higher. For me, best bang for buck are Vipers and Cobras... 15-30k bounties, tore to shreds with 4x Multicannons. Aim to be making 1 kill every few minutes.

I make approximately 1mil every hour on a good day... Beats dying of boredom trading or mining. And they say Bounty Hunting isn't viable ;)

Good hunting, Commander!

Goto Anarchy.
Goto Nav beacon.
Use KWS on everything
Kill everything
Scoop up everything until full.
Goto Black market sell everything.
Goto Fed station cash in bounties
Goto Imp system cash in bounties
Goto Alliance system cash in bounties.
Rinse, repeat.

I had the best luck squatting at a Nav beacon in an Anarchy system.

KWS scan everyone (grade C with 3km seems to be the most useful range). Take down the criminal scum and profit. Just be careful sometimes the dirtbags come in groups, and occasionally a big bad guy will jump in while you are killing someone else. Usually get around 350-450k in bounties before I run out of rail gun ammo and return to civilization to cash in.

Only bad thing is, the bounties are spread across all 3 major jurisdictions. So you may not be able to get your cash right away. I had 600k in Empire bounties stored up that I couldn't cash until flying down that direction.

Due to busy holiday season I haven't had a chance to come back here until today. Thanks all for the advice, went to an anarchy system and scanned away, made about 100K in bounty's and well enjoyed the fighting.

Buy a kill warrant scanner, go to anarchy system. nav beacon belts anywhere, scan every target, then check left panel contacts for their prize.

Just curious - what kind of ship and what kind of firepower is needed to take those elites out?

I have taken down several elite Anacondas with an upgraded Viper. I am probably just an average pilot but I find the Anacondas quite doable. Weapons Loadout is 2 Pulse Lasers, 2 Multicannons, Chaff and Shield Cells. Drop their Shields with pulse lasers, then destroy their Power Supply with Multicannons. Try to stay above / behind them and use Chaff to avoid being grilled by the Anaconda's weapons. If your shields take a beating, boost away and pop a shield cell. Biggest Problem for me so far is that the enemies sometimes try to flee when they are low on health...

I would suggest staying with the Viper as a bounty hunting ship it shields give you that bit extra before you have to use shield cells, I bought the Cobra a week ago and found the the ship was ideal for taking the cargo after taking out a bounty but that was pretty much it other than the large full capacity, fighting a Python is not a great idea with a cobra but if you want the big bounties as others have mentioned you don't settle for a sidewinder if a dropship is available.

Getting my Viper back :)
