Advice for ship progression

After reading this thread I'm drooling at the thought of owning an Asp. Currently in a top fitted Cobra and doing high value trade runs (2.4K Cr round trips) interspersed with BH at Nav points. i could afford to get the Asp now and continue my trading (possibly a rares run) and slowly upgrade to the Asp to high spec

Lookie what I have got:

Great allround ship, mostly because you can jump far, be equipped to handle most NPC interdictions, trade with a lot of cargo + it's the best cockpit in the game.

That is quite an interesting set up...

:) My crazy Vulture loadouts have had some other people scratching their heads. "Interesting" is right, but it'll still take out an Anaconda with a lot of careful damage management and a bit of time and patience.

Ace! Glad that non-Vulture got so much positive feedback in the thread. It's the only ship under 10M I haven't flown yet, but I have money burning a hole in my pocket. Interesting that an "explorer" is actually so blindingly versatile.

Enjoy your new toy!

I am still getting the Vulture, and I will try it with that set up.

I enjoyed my asp plenty, I loved the sound, the visibility, the handling just between a small and a large ship, and the feeling of freedom given by its multi-role capabilities. I then jumped in a Clipper and now I'm in a Vulture, but I still think to get back to an asp sometimes. It is probably the best bang for your bucks ship. The only thing though, if you plan to hunt big prey with it build it on the tank side, with such big cross section and only average maneuverability you won't dodge much lasers.

That at is what I have done. I was able to upgrade a little straight off and have enough for insurance and buying stuff to sell.

The Asp is a wonderful craft and as others have metioned its a great all rounder, you may need to use FA off quite a bit in combat, but7 i had an A graded one for a long time and it served me well.

I agree that the Asp is a wonderful "all-round" ship. But their is no "may need" FA off in combat. It is simply a matter of "need". The ship is too slow in turns (without boost) against smaller, nimble ships. FA will save your bacon in those cases. Keeps your hardpoints on target,,,,,

I have a Vulture and an Asp. On my Hotas I have the FA switch in a VERY easy to reach location on the throttle. I probably use it twice as much (If not more) on the Asp than the Vulture when things get hairy.

I wouldn't use the Vulture for exploration or trade. The main issue is the small fuel tank. With a good FSD you have to refuel about every 4 jumps. I even had to go on detours in the middle of populated space because there were not enough systems with stations or scoopable stars on the direct route. And the time loss for repeated refuleing/scooping is immense.
I'd prefer a Cobra for that in any case.

A lot of people seem to disparage the Asp's combat capability but they are always comparing it to a Vulture. The Vulture is a dedicated combat vessel so if all you are interested in is the pew pew and you are like ten years old then you'll probably have eyes for nothing else.

The Vulture is designed first and foremost as a combat vessel so it's hardly surprising it is better at combat than an Asp but in one respect only. Agility, including thruster response. Acceleration, deceleration etc.

In all other respects the Vulture is inferior except, arguably, firepower but even that is up for debate.

The Vulture is slower than the Asp, it has a shorter jump range, it has a much smaller fuel tank, less cargo space, it suffers from power issues. In short the Vulture is a one trick pony. Plus it's like a butt hole. Everybody has got one. It's 'sooooo awesome man!'

The Asp can give a very good account of itself in combat almost out of the box and certainly with a few mild upgrades. Once you get it up to A grade then it is most certainly a ship not to be trifled with. Even if you are flying a blessed Vulture.

Asp is the way to go - its the stepping stone to the bigger more expensive ships. I went from Eagle>Viper>Cobra>Asp and i'm now the proud owner of a Clipper. I experiemtned with a type 7 and hated it. Asp is one of the best mutli-role ships out there. With the right loadout it can hang in a combat zone or RES, do good trading and is best ever for exploration. I kept my Asp for quite some time and will probably go back to it when I fancy doing a bit of exploring again. I guess I like doing a bit of everything (might even try mining in 1.3). The Clipper is well dangerous in combat an can be kitted out to haul ~260t cargo if that takes your fancy, though range and suitability for exploration is limited.

Well I've Done it - reasonably specced out - Love the noise of the engines in normal drive and its got great all round visability (including downwards which is a great help in landing). Have doubled the cargo capacity of the Cobra - right off to do some trading and get my account back up.

So I have been using my Asp now for a while (for those in this thread who asked to let them know how I find it).

The jump range is amazing. The combat is quite nice, although I do struggle VS Anacondas. The versatility was great. I could switch from combat to trade no problem.

Then I started to play the Powerplay beta. My Powerplay save had a dormant bounty (I then realised it might have just been added in the beta to experiment with the new bounty system). So I swapped to my live save and went to the station where I was supposed to pay it off, so that I didn't have that dorman bounty when Powerplay went live. With the Asp, going from Persephone to that system was a matter of 5-10 minutes, with just a few jumps and no need to refuel.

It turns out I had no bounty (hence me thinking it might have just been added for the beta). However, after reading about the 10% penalty on module resale, I decided not to have a hybrid ship and just go for two specialised ships to reduce module swap. So I sold the Asp on the LIVE account (before Powerplay hits live and we get the 10% penalty) and got myself a Vulture (will get me a Type 6 again as well). I spent all evening trying to jump back to the original system I was in before I went on the quest to pay off that bounty that didn't exist. I refuelled several times and the map can't even calculate the route back...

Well, I still didn't get to the system (after the entire evening) but I do take down Anacondas a lot easier now. I made some sweet money in bounties. The first Anaconda I met did get me running, but it was a close fight, and I probably would have stayed if I had enough money for the insurance to see whether I could have won, as I actually flew away with only 10% difference in hull integrity from that first Anaconda.

So far I don't regret having the Vulture, as my interest has shifted to combat (and with the Powerplay it will be even more viable to just do combat if you like it). But that Asp jump range is amazing and if you want versatility and can't afford the Clipper, I can't recommend it enough.

This is how I have progressed since starting at Christmas, it might not help but its my route.

Sidewinder -> Hauler -> Cobra -> Asp -> Type 6 -> Type 7 -> Python -> Type 9 -> Python + Vulture -> Anaconda, Vulture, numerous Vipers -> ??
