Advice for T16000M

I did search a little and couldn't see anything specific so I am asking here and hope I am not duplicating. If I am, please point me in the right direction - thanks.

I am a brand new user of a stick - the T16000M specifically. I've never used one before but I have the basics bound OK - the throttle, stick movement and trigger for primary firing. So I can drive around using it. But I have questions - maybe an experienced user of this stick could pass on some advice.

What is the best use of the hat button? How do you handle primary and secondary firing groups? What is a good use of the rest of the buttons?

I always used kb/mouse in the past but I have to get used to the new flight model - basically, learn to fly! I've waited so long for the successor to FFE and I am not about to lose this fabulous opportunity to immerse myself in the Elite world once more! Anyway, end of ramble. Any and all advice on the use of this nice stick would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I don't use fire groups. I stick to one so I don't need to bind any buttons. However I have firegroups binded to my keyboard but never used them.

The hat switch have 3 functions for me.

1. In normal flying mode it controls the power distribution. really handy to have and important to learn and use power distribution, specially in dogfights.
And you want to switch fast between, full engine power or weapon, or shield power.

2. Ive binded one button that used to toggle on and off the menu mode so I can use the hat switch to first look left or right for the menus and 2 buttons to go left or right in the menus it self and up and down on the hat switch and select whit fire button.

3. Whit another button i toggle on and off the free cam mode and that override the power distribution so I can look around whit the hat switch but still fly normal. handy when you want to look at the surrounding or orientate your self when you approach a station.

So you can use the hatswitch for different purpose if you use some keys/buttons that toggle different modes. And in different modes, same buttons can have different assignment.

Iam using a T flight Hotas X stick but il guess you can configure your stick as same as I can.

Oh and best advice I can give you is to load up the canister scenario and set up your stick while testing and learn to be comfortable where the buttons and functions you assign are.

if you are able to play 4.3 alpha you will get some new functions as well that you need to set up and that is the landing keys/buttons. But just copy the functions for your normal flight to the landing section. And it wont be any difference to flying normal or in landing mode ( it switch automatically when you approach a landing pad.) Here u also need to use your thrusters, up and down and left and right.
First time I tried to land all my buttons and axes etc was reversed. Crashed 2 ships before i figured out what was wrong :D

I use the hat switch for the directional thrusters and the keyboard arrow keys for power distribution. I use the mouse for free look.

I haven't really spent much time trying to find the "perfect" key bindings yet, knowing that they may be wiped out with new updates.

Copy your Custom.bind file before each update to keep your settings. :)
That's how i do it so i don't have to configure the stick everytime there is an update.

Same here. I find that keeping all the directional controls on the same hand just makes life easier. Also the arrow keys are in a group by themselves on my kbd so it seemed an obvious thing to do. The only thing I would say with using the mouse for free look is that it's a bit over-sensitive, and the mouse sensitivity in the control menu doesn't seem to tone it down. At some point I'll no doubt reduce the sensitivity level in Win8 and see if that works...

One other thing is that I also use the hat for navigating around the UI menus (using buttons 3 & 4 for moving between menus). Not sure I have this bit optimally set up, but it works.

I have base buttons bound to things like boost, SC, HS, weps toggle, etc. (can't actually remember all of them, but will get round to putting more of the toggle functions like landing gear, FA, etc. across from kbd.). Slight problem is that the base keys are a bit anonymous in appearance so I occasionally forget where I've put stuff - tricky if you're under fire!

Hat buttons = thrusters and panel navigation.

For fire groups, I have button 5 (top left base button) shifting buttons 6 & 7 into prev and next group. You can do shifting in the Thrustmaster TARGET software, or if you like scripting then see my GlovePIE guide in my sig.

I use the hat button for looking around but that's only because I have a logitech g13 as well and can use the stick on that for thrusters.

Before then I used the hat for thrusters as it worked best like that for both docking and combat. I also originally mapped menu selection and movement to the left hand bank of 6 and head views to the right. I put the Next Fire Group command on button 4 (the right hand one).

But now I use Voice Attack for a lot of things like power management.

I third that request, can someone make my life easier please and upload their T.16000M bindings? It'd be a perfect way to start and probably save me an hour or so, as from what I've read there are multitudes of people having problems with setting up their sticks/keyboard/mouse configs.

Cheers.

Same for me with a T16kM, apart from I use an EDTracker for looking (and everyone should own one at that price!)
