Advice for upgrading to python

Greetings all. I am in need of some advice for when I upgrade to possibly the python or T9. My current set-up is a Type 7 for trading and a Vulture for combat, my total current assets if I trade both ships in is around 40 million so I still have a ways to go.

I need advice as I would prefer not having to sell the Vulture since it's an absolutely amazing fighting ship and I'm worried that upgrading to the less manoeuvrable and larger python will be detrimental to my combat effectiveness. I was hoping to use the python as a trading ship since it has more cargo capacity than the type 7 and can land at outposts (which is very useful), then use the Vulture for combat. However I don't know much about the python so I need to ask is it better at fighting than the Vulture? Can I use it as an all rounder? Should I skip it and buy a Type 9 then use a Vulture for combat?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a pure bounty hunter, and i moved up from the vulture to thy python as my main fighting ship
The python is slower yes, but its damage output is incredible, usually my targets blow up before they have a chance to try to escape, to be fair i do PVE, so i cant tell you how it plays against other people, but bounty hunting in a python is literally a blast :D
After fighting with it for a week or so i tried the vulture again and felt underwhelmed, those 3 large and 2 medium slots just spoiled me :D

I'd advise not selling the Vulture, getting the Python when you can and working with it specced out as a trader until you can afford more upgrades for the Python, and consider selling the vulture for some of those nicer upgrades. Look at the price of class 7 power plants for example, and how much the thrusters are going to set you back as an upgrade, and you can see you're not going to get a fun combat ship without a significant amount of cash sunk into extras. Once you can afford some upgrades for combat, you can try it out and consider selling the Vulture then to fund some of the higher spec extras.

The Python is a major upgrade as a trader over a type 7, and can land at outposts again, so you definitely want to pick one up even if you plan to go to a type 9 later.

Imho a well equiped Python is a better combat ship than the vulture. It is much more efficient at killing big ships, especially when you are in an instance with back-to-back winged anacondas. It is slower and less maneuverable, but once you get used to it it is a really nice ship (i claimed the opposite while i was still in the process of getting used to the python... :)). The T9 is incredibly slow and turns like a containership (it IS a containership...).

Do you do PvP? Keep the Vulture. PvE only? Sell both, never look back. Btw, with some 90 mil, you can waltz into the deLacy dealership like a boss. Not a big boss, but a boss nonetheless.

Thanks everyone for your input! I will keep the Vulture until I get the Python upgraded moderately to work as an all rounder. I play in open and enjoy combat during my downtime from trading so it's probably best to keep the Vulture until the Python is upgraded enough to be it's replacement.

Thanks Again!

Hello StephenB,

I used to have type-7 as well which I traded to Python once I had the credits for it. I recommend that you sell the Vulture (Python beats it in all aspects expect speed & maneuverability). Of course, upgrading and maintaining Python is quite expensive, but if you plan to trade with it, it'll make those credits fairly quickly.

I am relatively experienced and wealthy commander, and I used to have Anaconda and FDL as well, but I sold those since I definitely preferred Python over them (Anaconda was A class except the power plant and FDL was completely A class). I like to have a single ship as having many does not serve my play-style well.

I find it pretty easy to modify Python's setup if needed, but at the moment I have totally A-class multipurpose setup which is good in anything except exploration. If you want to check out my Python setup, it can be found here.

My setup has only 128 tonne cargo bays, but ATM I don't need more as I do missions to advance in faction ranks. If I need to trade, which I don't at the moment, I would change some combat relevant modules for extended cargo.

I skipped the Python on my way from a T7 to a T9, but it's a great ship, for trading as well as for combat.I bought one later on, never regretted it. The sheer firepower totally makes up for it's lack of speed and maneuverability.

Only, you need some serious cash to fully upgrade a Python, i'm talking around 160M or so... Don't be fooled by the 'buy-in', you'll need three times as much... Granted, it will be a lot less for a trader version. So you can start with that and upgrade along the way ^.^

Overall, the Python is definitely a wonderful ship, totally worth to get.

So you would say the Python is at the moment your most favourable ship? I have seen a lot of good comments regarding the Python. It's safe to say that there isn't any need to skip the python for a type 9 then. :)

Definately would say so, which is only my opinion, but based on the personal experience. I have never tried type-9, I went to Annie instead, but as I said, I sold it as I considered Python being better. Anaconda was too slow and clumsy in my opinion (and how would I feel in Type9?); yes, Annie had awesome firepower and shield strength, but nonetheless I thought it was a boring ship. Totally overrated ;) Of course, it is quite a safe ship to trade in, but so is Python. Anaconda can haul more though. When it comes to Type-9, there are probably throng of commander pirates in open play drooling over to kill you if you were flying type-9.

I owned a Python. Loved it before the nerf, loved it after the nerf. But I sold it for a La9. Got the niner, made a lot of cash with it within weeks (500T cargo), bought a Vulture fully A graded and now love my new setup. La9 is great for making lots of cash but having no fun at all (flies like a brick, looks like a brick). But when you leave the La9 and get in the Vulture ... WOW... I kill npc Condas within 20 or 30 secs max. Just aim for the power plant and you can fire your pulses without stopping so no need for a Python... My plan is - keep the La9 for making cash - and yes when I have enough cash - sell the Vulture and buy a shiny new Python...

You need 76 million (this includes cargo and one rebuy) before you jump to a trading Python with A3 shields, 284 cargo, A5 FSD and D everything else. Its a great trading ship. You need about 136 million to turn her into a PvE fighter, and 180 million to max out everything except bulkheads. I sold everything to buy my Python; but remember you make about 4 million an hour pretty easily so 5 or 6 hours you can buy back a maxed Vulture.

The python is still very effective as a combat ship. It puts the pain down fast no need to be manuverable.
personal opinion though liquidate everything once you're at 75 mill and get a trader python put some guns on it and laugh at npc's. Grab the T9 and work towards your conda then rebuy any ships you want to have in your stable.

Just an afterthought... When 1.3 comes out I sincerely want to try the Python as a miner. Don't laugh at me ... Nice cargo hold... So lot's of probes... Nice number of weapon loadouts ... Mining lasers AND big guns ... And a power plant as big as ushima - I don't know if this is a plus :p

New to Python myself having traded in Asp (this was hard but will rebuy this week) & Vulture. Enjoying being able to trade with outposts 256t cargo, and easy to find good trade routes with it. T9 little harder.
Not done much combat, but NPC's seem to have up'd there game when attacking. Was in Asp NPC small fighers 1's and 2's, now in Python Asp+ and 2+ others.

My 1p worth of advise careful of running costs. Killed in a Vulture 1m+ killed in Python 4m+, think about time it takes to get funds for insurance and cargo.

Just one word

Insurance

Some more words - make sure you have enough cash to cover insurance - you're looking at millions to replace on destruction.

Thought the same.

Really 136 mill. Im running 80mill pve and it blitzs everything. Even pvp should be ok as you can run 3 shield boosters and multiple cells.

So many people say you need to A rate. Why?

My vulture at 10mill was awsome pve but after the python it sits gathering dust.

Because I have the attention span of a fly, I keep a vulture for bounty hunting, a python for trading, and an Asp for rares run. It costs a lot to get a python battle ready, which negatively affects its usability as a trader.
So I guess what you need to answer is: What are you going to use it for?

Because you'll come up against 3*Lasers + 2 * Multi (or 5* lasers), boosters, cells, hull reinforcement. If you're lucky.
.
If you're unlucky there will be 3 other ships in a wing that'll wanna fry you.
