Advice needed gone since horizon's came out.

Life decided to intrude on my ED fun just after I bought Horizon's, well now life is back on track.

Newly rebuilt pc 6700k, Nvidia 1080, 16gb DDR4 Samsung 950 m2 500gb HD. Check.
I think my character is still sitting in an ASP Explorer.

Apart from going through the tutorials tomorrow what should I do to make some money (safishly to start with have forgotten more than I remember about playing). I am primarily a PVE person.

Going to take a while for me to get use to VR the scale of the cockpit is amazing everything is so shiny and buttons all over the place.

Depends rather on when exactly you stopped...

Since 2.1, NPCs are somewhat more challenging, so pay attention to their ranks, and depending on your combat skills only pick fights with ships / ranks that you feel you can manage. If in doubt, run away, and make sure your shields are up to scratch.

Missions are a decent way to make some credits, but pay attention to the rank of the mission! You are no longer prevented from taking missions above your own rank, but the general idea is that the higher ranked the mission, the more challenges you will face. Work your way up, testing the waters, and if you're not keen on being shot at too much, try to stick to clean delivery missions and don't stack too many at a time, as you are less likely to be interdicted.

Very low ranked trade data recovery missions don't generally have too much opposition, but the higher ranked ones will, and you probably don't want to get caught with your cargo scoop deployed.

If you happen to take missions that give cargo as part of the reward, these are usually items that engineers will want at some point. Flying around with them in your hold tends to act as a magnet to being interdicted by NPC pirates, so unless you think you really need them, sell them.
 
Your question is pretty vague. What should I do to make money? I guess the answer is, play the game. Trade. Do Bounty Hunting. Do Missions. Do Mining.

As above, NPCs are a lot more dangerous now, any high-ranked NPC in pretty much any craft could present a challenge. The other thing is Engineers, the upgrades can make a huge difference so (IMO!) are well worth the time investment.
 
Might I suggest that you empty your cargo bays completely, and try hunting pirates down at the Nav Beacon? It's a relatively quiet area, and you can get a feel for the new AI there. You can lock onto the Beacon object (not the navigation point) once inside the drop in area, and it will get scanned now- useful for finding the layout of a solar system, or locating mission objectives.

You'll definitely be finding a whole load of stuff to scoop up from kills. Engineer materials. Fit up a Wake Scanner, and start scanning High Wakes to get data you will need.

I'd definitely suggest visiting Felicity Farseer, but maybe you could look at trying some landings with a disposable Sidewinder till you get the hang of it.
 
My apology for the vagueness I made a little money and upgraded to an asp explorer by (can not remember the name) you fly to a nav point at a planet ring and shoot pirates and faction stuff as it comes to prey on the miners, I slowly gave in bounties and worked my way up to an asp explorer about 3 days before Horizons released then life got quite complicated and until we moved house did not even log on ED.


What do I want to do? Explore, shoot things and make them go boom, get down to the SRV stuff and the engineering stuff.

Community Goals's are currently the money cows now that the playerbase is shutting down the long distance trade/smuggling runs.
Grinding up a good rep with a minor faction leads to decent money. Distance give those decent money missions is a multiplyer, hence the long distance missions being the latest gold-rush, which are being shut down by players screwing with those systems economies and stations to shut down the missions. (The missions where fine, but people could constantly relogg on and stack new missions and make a killing).

Engineers do exactly what they say, they upgrade (it's a see-saw thing) modules at a expense of other functions.
Some of the material and commodities can be a swine to get, but they do come.

Exploration is about to get better in about 6 weeks with the release of 2.2, so I'd hold off.

Overcharge that Asp of yours. That's my plan anyway.

If you've taken a break then the enemy AI has got a bit better. So prepare to die a fair bit for a week or two. With a combination of that and the new control set-up, I would heartily recommend buying a smaller, cheaper ship so that death and rebuy does not stress you out. That way you won't worry about death while you get used to things again and adapt to the AI and your cool new rig.

EDIT: number one tip: Four pips to shields when under effective fire! It drastically reduces damage taken to your shields.

Don't: Go cheaper and smaller instead. Buy a cheaper pure combat craft. It's a lot of fun and removing the stress of death-costs takes a lot of frustration out of the game. If you want to use the Python, I really recommend some turrets, to foil agile NPCs. A couple of Cl2 pulse and maybe another one or a Cl3 pulse turret will really soften up foes nicely while you aren't pointing at them.
