Ships Advice needed on a combat ship to choose

Hi Commanders.
I have finally reached Elite in exploration and now intend to progress my combat rank from Mostly Harmless to Elite also!
I have just shy of 150 Million Credits and a fully kitted out Asp.
My current thinking is to retain the Asp and go for 5 x fixed Multi Cannons.
Does anyone have any better ideas/ comments to make?
Thanks

A well fitted Asp is an excellent BH but it's size makes it an easy target at CZ's and high intensity RES, for that type of work I'd suggest a Viper or Vulture as the first is a small target and the second agile and tough.

Viper for single system CZ

Vulture for multi system CZ and RES

The Diamondback Scout is another worth testing

The FDL and the Python are also worth checking out but they're fairly serious money so i'd suggest you do some builds on Coriolis or similar but even though they might have enough power to run the systems the weapons are supplied from the power dist ans it'll limit the firing time, I'd suggest around 3 MW for the FDL and up to 4 MW for the Python

Budget Python check for ship and equipment discounts

Suggested FDL build (I haven't tried this so...)

Easiest answer is spread all over these forums; the Vulture is purpose built for what you are looking for. Get your feet wet with that and then determine if you want to upgrade to an FDL/Python or something else. DBS is also surprisingly good.

DBS is excellent in RES/CZ's for combat and BH. Fast, agile and good weapon hardpoint placement make it a formidable small fighter, and its CHEAP AS CHIPS. I have one perma moored for when I am not exploring in my ASP.

Its like a small hard terrier on hard pills. not a Mastiff but has enough spirit to bite the ankles of bigger ships.

I haven't flown it yet, from what I've seen on these boards and playing about with coriolis.io, the Imperial Courier is a nice, fun, and relatively cheap fighter. May not be as good as a Vulture but it's relatively low rebuy cost makes it disposable, and good for higher risk stuff. And, she sure is easy on the eyes :)

Again, haven't gotten one yet take it with a grain of salt. I was going to get one eventually. Right now busy getting funds to A-grade a Clipper. Well, when I get back from vacation that is :) Just wanted to give the Courier a mention, it was feeling lonely :)

My main combat ship it an FDL right now, but I think I would recommend the Vulture to you. You have enough cash that it's not going to be a big expense, and tough shields and high maneuverability make it a very forgiving ship if you're just getting your feet wet.

Normally I would recommend a Vulture - credit for credit it is the best combat vessel in it's class, in fact it can even hit well above it's weight when kitted out correctly. Thing is, the Vulture is rather... well boring to fight NPCs with. If your goal is to hit Elite then go for it, there are a multitude of threads here that cover most if not all the best loadouts.

Personally though try out the Viper, DBS or Imperial Courier, while none of these are the hard hitters that the Vulture is they are (in my opinion) infinitely more fun to fly. Nothing beats taking down an Elite Anaconda in a quad MC DBS (although you do generally limp away afterwards) or the roar of the Viper's engines as you boost towards those distant laser trails...

Or just have a blast with your Asp, it'll hit hard but struggle a bit against those pesky smaller ships.

The penguin is not wrong. :) My Viper is a BLAST to fly and fight in, and I have a Combat/Exploration Asp (because I am stupid) that can more than handle itself in most fights.

If you want efficient and easy to learn, the Vulture is perfect. If you want fun... Look for anything with a high top speed and a shape that makes you smile.

Based on your war chest of credits, I would work with a Vulture first and foremost. It is arguably the best combat ship in the game, and for the money. You do have to work out the module priorities though, as the power is insufficient to optimally run the ship while hardpoints are deployed. However, pound for pound it will hang and destroy pretty much any ship in the game, and the most agile of powerful ships for dogfighting, while still smaller and more manuverable. I concentrate most of my play in combat, and the Vulture definitely was a major money maker for me once I could afford it. I also agree about the DBS, it is surprisingly good in battle, and a great dogfighting ship. I currently have a Python and a FDL, although, I absolultely adore my FDL, it limits what I can do beyond combat for board missions and PP, so I have the Python as well. I wouldn't recommend the Python for combat because it is cost prohibitive if you have 150 million to spend, as you can easily spend all of your money fitting out that ship. Here are my builds for each of the ships, which are tried, true and tested, and I definitely think you should go with the Vulture, which will cost you about 20 million to fully kit out for combat. The website will also show you how to prioritize the power for the modules as well to remove the guesswork:

Vulture: http://coriolis.io/outfit/fer_de_la...4a335d5566.AwRj4yrI.EwBhEYy6bZ3MIA==?bn=FDL 1

DBS: http://coriolis.io/outfit/diamondba...m07040440582t6b.AwRj4yKA.IwBhrSq5iA==?bn=DS 1

FDL: http://coriolis.io/outfit/fer_de_la...4a335d5566.AwRj4yrI.EwBhEYy6bZ3MIA==?bn=FDL 1

Hope this helps, enjoy!

You have more than enough credits, why not start with the smaller ships?

The Viper is cheap (~3 to 4 million Cr) and a great ROI. Pledged to ALD mine pays for itself every 2 hours (give or take). It's also incredibly fun.

The asp is a great fighting ship, are there better. yes. but it all depends on how you fly, I consider the asp the first of the real tank ships, it can go toe to toe with most anything, it has the jump range to chase down most anything and the speed and manoeuvrability to really put a crimp in someone's day.

Oh and with the build below, ramming is always an option :D

ASP'y shooty goodness

My ship progression went sidey>viper>cobra>asp>python>conda

I also fly a Vulture as a run around and as everyone here says, it's a fantastic ship.....BUT, there's a special place in my heart for the asp as I spent a long time in it, before going over to a python.

Just as a background, I'm an elite combat pilot and that's all I've really done since gamma was released. So take it from me, the asp can be a right pain in the £^$% :D

I recommend learning to fight in the Viper, then grabbing a Vulture or FDL once you can handle yourself in the weaker ship.

Hopefully the 6th h-point is reserved for a laser to take down shields....
Keep the Asp, and go buy a Vulture.
Vulture is great, 2 large lasers mean ships go down, and you stay out longer as you are not required to go buy ammo.
Fit a KWS as it counts as extra bounties, helping the ranking process.
I can't comment on the FdL, as I don't understand its function for price.

Probably a good idea to be honest, I seem to remember learning the hard way about blind spots and turret coverage while doing RESs in my Viper. Thinking about it, I've grown quite soft - so might grab myself a Viper and relearn the ropes!

Six frag cannons. Not even kidding. Drops an anaconda in something like nine seconds. Great for silent running, assassination missions, and PvP.
