Ships Advice on build for Tharg-tourism

I haven't had any interaction with the Thargoid War beyond rescuing people from stations and bases in the opening days of the war with a bashed up Beluga and a devil-may-care attitude. I'm so far off track with knowledge about Glaives, Pulse Neutralisers and even how to get to a Titan that it's just silly now. Something needs to be done and that something is some casual, no doubt ill-prepared, tourism.

The two things I do know, or think I know, are that speed and a low power signature are your life-lines. With that pathetic level of knowledge in mind I immediately took to the bowels of my Fleet Carrier and dusted off my old speedy Viper, where I sat with a pen and paper crunching some numbers. Unfortunately my lack of Thargoid knowledge doesn't combine well with my appalling ability to crunch, or otherwise, numbers of any sort. After much cruching all I had was some crumbs and a messy cockpit.

So I turn to you, my fellow Cmdrs, with a request for help, advice and a lot understanding. I'd very much appreciate anyone running their eye (both if it suits and is applicable) over my refit of what is essentially a speed-Viper.

My desire is purely to get in and around a Titan for a good old 'snout about,' maybe grab a selfie and generally be an annoying, culturally insensitive tourist. Getting out would be nice and my parents would probably be pleased with that result but I've spent a lot of time in Escape Pods over the years and subsequently have great faith in the Pilots Federation Rescue Rangers. So if it all goes whotsits-up ... no bother.

Thank you for your patience and sharing your time and advice. Current build below.

Tharg-tourist

I see. So there’s some mats gathering and module unlocking required simply to get to the heart of the Maelstrom safely, even if I’m not planning to do anything much when I get there.

Seems a rethink is in order. Little point in doing all that and just being a tourist when I get there. I may as well go the whole way and unlock whatever’s needed to build a ship capable of joining in some anti-Tharg work.

I’d better do some research. Seems like you‘re all-in or all-out.
Thanks for the info

I used a variation of this clipper to gather the mats required for a caustic sink, and to get in after, although it was pre-Glaive. I'd replace the Caustic Sink in that build with an ECM to aid in getting through any Glaive attacks; silent running when they interdict you, then ECM if they still see you and fire the FSD reboot missile (their first attack will be the FSD missile). Then, when you get to the maelstrom (Taranis is closest/shortest SC distance, tho maybe not after today!) you can follow the many guides to collect the mats needed from the Caustic Generators. Stick to the periphery of the maelstrom to reduce caustic damage, use silent running and the beam laser to heat up and remove caustic damage. Basically you need a cold and fast tank that can repair itself to maximize your time in the maelstrom, while keeping the rebuy cheap. Also note that build has a very short range, which with hyperdictions is a big issue, so find a close carrier to stage your efforts from. You will probably be eating more than a few rebuys. Also, check Inara for Caustic Shards being sold on Carriers if you want to make things easier.

Once you have the Caustic sink, and the Thargoid Pulse Nuetralizer, then you can get in to the Titan itself.

I can see from this I’ll be racking up a few rebuys as I learn to deal with so much new stuff. Up until now my Thargoid interaction has been a few scouts and being scanned after a hyper diction every so often. Lots of new things to take on board.

Thanks for the build link. From what I’ve read the Clipper is a popular ship for this kind of thing and it’s handy to get an idea prior to going in. I don’t really want to spoil the experience by watching Youtube vids/tutorials so finding a balance between gathering some knowledge and not just ‘spoiling the show’ is important to me if I’m going to do more than just have a look at the Titans afterall.

Cheers

Might want to check the latest on that -

That should reduce @Rock Hunter your tourism efforts significantly!

Looks like I won’t even need to do the tech unlocks for the modules now. Personally, and perhaps obviously with this thread in mind, I think that’s fantastic news. Below is from the News and Bulletins page.

To aid pilots in the fight against the Titans, all Rescue Ships stock the required modules: Guardian Nanite Torpedo Pylons, Shutdown Neutraliser and Caustic Sink Launcher. The Tech Broker requirements for both the Shutdown Neutraliser and Caustic Sink Launcher have been removed, to ensure that anyone can be fully equipped for the monumental battle. Make use of the Thargoid War view in the Galaxy Map to find Titan locations and real-time battle information - for those of you looking to take on Taranis, the Hutner in the nearby Telin system is the closest Rescue Ship to visit.
