Advice on gaming headsets to go with HMD

I’m very happy with my G2 and love the off ear speakers for Elite Dangerous. However, I also play a lot of racing sims with Fanatec FFB wheel and pedals which make far more noise than any HOTAS set up can. This becomes really annoying as it pulls you out of the immersion VR gives you.

So I’m looking to get a wireless gaming headset that I’m hoping will fit over the G2, provide decent sound and a mic that isn’t a waste of time.

Does anyone have any experience of using a VR headset with gaming headphones and any advice or recommendations they’re happy to share.

Thanks

I am no audiophile but I recently bought these and I am very happy with them...

Thanks Dooguk. Those have been on my list of potentials, I just haven’t found any information anywhere (including their own website) that suggests the headset is (size) adjustable beyond the headband using Velcro to tighten or loosen the fit.

They’re supposed to be pretty impressive but I don’t know whether I could get them over the HMD headset.

Typically I’m back in near lockdown with shops closed so can’t have a good look at things ‘in the flesh.’

Well I can tell you that the headphones are not that adjustable, just the Velcro strap as you quite rightly surmised. They really could do with more adjustment for the price they charge. I think I'll put a complaint in. Now I am a bit taller than average at 6ft 5" in old money and have a UK hat size of 7 1/4 (59cm). So I just did an experiment to see if they go over the G2. I removed the speakers on the G2 and tried the headphones and yes they do go over, but the Velcro strap is at it's full length. If your head measurement is smaller than mine it should not be a problem. As they are quite light I imagine you could wear them for a few hours in VR no problem. Having used them for a few weeks I have gotten quite adept at swapping the batteries without taking off the headset. :) Any more questions you have about the headset ask away.
Hope this helps.

That’s very useful to know, thank you so much for taking the time to test them over your own G2, it‘s very kind.

I’m a fair bit shorter at 6’ 2” so if I can postulate that I’m generally smaller I may get away with it with a little wriggle room. I’m pretty sure we had the obligatory cheap tape measure in a Christmas cracker again this year so I can actually measure my head too.

I‘m no audiophile either so have been trying to temper reactions to various reviews which are obviously written by those with the expectations of a sound engineer. Living in a time of reviews for absolutely everything and from everybody it can be a minefield in itself just finding your way through them. My previous wired headphones were a paltry £20/£30 so anything in this kind of price bracket is likely to be a big improvement.

I don’t know if you use the microphone much but in ED and racing sims I use the mic to deliver orders and questions to a Crew Chief and AI programs (the HCS voicepacks for ED.) I’ve read that the Arctis Pro mic is one of the best which would be very useful, beyond that it’s pretty much about the fit.

Thanks again, your help has been extremely gratefully received.

Not a gaming headset but I've been using a Sony WF-1000XM3 for most of 2020 and they have been hands down the best headphones I've ever used. I think the main points for me were good audio quality, noise cancelling, and bluetooth (since it's easier with VR). The microphone might drive up the price since there are a lot of parts that go with that. It might be cheaper to nab a bluetooth lapel mic or similar but for sure it's not as clean as having it integrated.

I switched to using the Sony headphones within the first week of using VR and the difference was huge. Some extra nice parts for VR are that it has a swipe control on the outside of the right headphone to make it easy to pause/play/skip music and adjust the volume. The fit is also super comfy for me. I usually wear it 10+ hours/day without problems (with WFH). The battery life lasts longer than 24 hours so I've never run out of juice and it uses usb-c for fast charging.

The sound in ED is the best of any game I've ever played. Turning on the 3D headphone sound options makes the game really come alive. If it's in your price range and you're willing to forgo the mic part these could be a solid choice too :)
