Advice on if to continue

Hello.

Bought the game a week ago on Steam. I played the original many years ago, and similar games like X series etc.

Loaded game up, went to first tutorial, shot gas cansiters that are invincible. Watched videos on flight etc. Tried again, used "t" to target, and again, from afew metres away are indestructable. 20 mins of my life I will never get back.

Skipped it, went to next one, combat. Just flying in circles as two faster craft simply out turn you so you go round in circles.

I spent the money and will probably not get a refund, but is this it, or is it worth persevering through this or wait till game works?

Feel free to flame me if you wish, its just a genuine question as I dont want to waste even more time, but would ideally like to actually play the game.

Thank you for reading.

The game is much more exciting than the training missions. The game works just fine. Go get gimballed weapons if you're like me and too lazy to aim. :p

Trying a few tutorials is so far removed from experiencing this game in it's entirety, that it's hard to know where to even begin. It's really a great game, forget about tutorials and try the real thing. It's hard to tell you whether to proceed or not because you haven't really experienced anything that's really relevant to making that call.

As for that endless circle dogfight you mentioned, this game has a feature called flight assist off. Basically turns on newtonian mode. Real useful in dogfights ;)

The best part of the game is flying around in supercruise, hopping through systems, combat, and listening to the audio. If I remember right, you start in a sidewinder which is a very boring ship. If you liked the original, which was basically just trading and combat without a story, then you should love this game.

Ah well, I've played for hundreds of hours, I might be a bit biased.

Don't give up, there is so much more so see in the open game.
Ignore the tutorials and just jump into the cold water.

You probably won't accomplish much at first but buying your first ship from your own money should hook you good... ;)

Don't shoot them too close, the guns don't converge so much. Try 200m or further away.

You need to alter your speed (try to keep it, or at keast the throttle in the blue zone) and use lateral (vertical) thrusters.

Thanks for the advice chaps.

Will skip learning how to play and see if I can deal with the learning curve more naturally.

I just have these fond memories of owning a ship I think was called a Panther, and found this route between two systems that made a ton of money.

Will see how it goes)

You're gonna love it... This is an awesome game that of course requires some crash & burns as you beat the learning curve... But yes... Go ahead and jump in, I think you'll soon find that you got a heck of a bargain in buying this game.

Caombat isn't the only thing to this game. You can trade like in past iterations of the franchise. You can explore the 400 billion stars. The only thig holding back the game is yopur imagination. The tutorials are good to give you a chance to get to grips with the ships handling but until you play the game you won't see the real enjoyment some of us find in it. And one word of warning, till you have got a real grip of hte game play in solo. There are some in open that will hunt you as a newbie just for the giggles. I know that ain't good but its life. Fly safe CMDR. :)

I would still do each of the tutorials... you'll probably be back here to find out how to dock on an Outpost (its usually because you're pointing the wrong way)

Edit: tutorials are a good chance to edit key bindings.. like your thrusters etc.

The travel tutorial is probably the most useful before playing. If docking drives you nanners, you could always get a docking computer.

OP - it sounds like you're short on patience and/or willingness to learn, if I'm being completely honest. ED rewards those who spend time understanding its flight mechanics and relatively complex UI. I'm over a year into the game, and still learning (and enjoy the game for that reason). If you're the type who just wants to jump in, have some casual fun with a low learning curve, ED may not be for you.

Edit: good place to look for tips/tricks is the guide and tutorial sub-forum, and FD's videos. Good place to ask help is also the newcomer forum - where other newcomers are dealing with the steep early learning curve.

Definitely this. If you use the tutorials for nothing else at least make sure you are competent at getting from A to B and safely docked before you hit the main game. If not a world of expensive frustration awaits.

The docking computer is a spiffing bit of kit and I wouldn't be without mine but it takes up a slot and costs 4.5k, neither of which are going to be available to a new player.

Hold your horses Commander, and welcome to Elite: Dangerous! :)

Just like previous iterations, Elite: Dangerous is not user friendly in the typically quirky british sort of way.

Forget about the tutorials. Go grab that Sidewinder. Get blown up several times, Marvel at the lack of information as to what to actually do, and how to do it.

Slowly settle into the knowledge and remember that this is typical Elite.

Spend hours watching Youtube videos on how to. Spend hours on this forum trying to understand the non sensical ins and outs.

And then remember that there is no end game. There is no race (unless you make it so).

Only thousands of hours of gameplay, where you fly around space, doing what you want to do. And that the game world will continue to grow richer over time.

Smile. :)

Fly safe Commander.

I highly recommend you read the PDF manual before playing again, I'm not meaning to be awkward but 15 mins reading will save you a heap of frustration and maybe even credits in the long run. :)

I'm sure you'll enjoy it once you get stuck in.

The original as I remember was hard to begin with. You are in a ship and your weapons converge so too close is not optimum distance. Change speed, use the blue zone to avoid a turning battle.

Could you have been any more patronising?

Anyway, thanks to everyone else.

I spent over 1,200 hours playing the X series, and from flying around for an hour or so and reading reviews this game has some way to go to in being an improvement.

Will find another game to play and come back to this when they have made it more user friendly.

Enjoy your game chaps)

I thought that was a reasonable and helpful post...
.
The day this game becomes "more user friendly" will put off many existing players.
