Engineers Advice regarding praseodymium mining

Need to get (18t) praseodymium so I get permission to irkutsk station to buy me an asp exp. Tried for two days(total time five hours) then a pirate shows up and blows me out of the sky with two shots(!?) . Had no time to defend my self... What do I do wrong?.. this felt actually like a bummer since its no fun if you cant do anything to countermeasure it.... for the moment ED dont feels fun. [blah][sour]
Any suggestions?

I found that I could mine about 5 tons before the NPCs got me.
So, I took a mining ship (with fuel scoop) out to some 700 ly from Sol. I found some pristine metal rich rings and came back carefully with about 70% hold full.
No interference from NPCs - or anyone else. The only problem there is outfitting the ship. However, once you've located your mining source, you can leave the Scanners behind - do take plenty of limpets and a collector controller plus prospector unit.

I take the simple approach. Drop into a Pristine Metallic ring, not near a RES. I make sure to have no cargo in my hold, other than limpets. Wait, and either a Pirate or an Authority ship will come by and scan you. Either way, they leave you alone after the scan, if you have no cargo. Then I fly 10-20km away, and do my mining in peace. As long as you don't log off and on (or get disconnected), nothing will come bother you.

If you DO get disconnected or have to log off, then just be aware that when you re-connect the pirate or authority vessel will show up again. So expect it, and get away before they can get to you. You'll have a minute, so use it to quickly get up out of the ring, and hi-wake away to the next system. That'll shake 'em off your tail.

The best source of praseodymium is a pristine metallic ring. The closest pristine metallic to Alioth (I know of) is Alkupai, planet 12, which is 77ly from Alioth. Be careful when dropping into the ring, as this "planet" is actually a T-Tauri star, so overheating can be an issue.

Thanks everyone for your advice..
1. Use pristine metallic rings(will try to find one)
2. Move when you are scanned.
3. Or blast intruders

Will try to use them next time I play(before saturday 19gmt when mission times out) :D

When you pop into the belt, boost away until you are 25-40km from your entry point. No more ships should drop in around you after that.

A would-be pirate scanned me when I had about 40 tonnes of praseodymium and flew off saying I didn't have anything worth taking.

I was rather offended!

Praseodymium? Just be glad you didn't have 1t of that most rare of commodities - Biowaste, then he woulda been all over you
