Advice Requested for PC Upgrade + Oculus Rift Performance.

Been playing ED for a long time , but recently i decided to jump into VR with an Oculus Rift.

My PC is quite old (7 years) but anyways i was able to run ED on Ultra without any problem. Anyways when i switched to VR noticed some performance problems (jitters, etc..) ... so i guess it's time to upgrade.

My current Setup is as follows:
i7-2700k
ms-7707 (motherboard)
16GB DDR3 .
gtx 1070
SSD 500gb.

I'm mainly using my computer for Work + Elite Dangerous so its time to ask what should i buy...

My Graphic Card isnt TOP but i guess CPU + Motherboard is what i'm currently in need. What do you guys think for an i7-8700k? or Should i go for a cheaper option like an i5-8400 ? What about RAM, 16 DDR4 3000 should be fine or go for 32GB ?

And beside that, what motherboard should i purchase for i7 and i5?

I'm not really on a budget but don't want to throw cash on overpriced hardware.

Thx in advance.

A couple of months ago I upgraded my system - from i5 4670K 16gb DDR3 to i7 8700 16gb DDR4. I didn’t want to go overclocking again so I went for the slightly cheaper none “k” version.

I’ve seen a big increase in performance in all my VR games even though I’ve had to keep my graphics card (GTX 1060 6gb) for a few more months. Any stutters and hitches have gone, and I’ve been able to tweak up a few settings in Skyrim VR. For ED I’ve got pretty much all the same settings I had with none-VR (high/ultra) but Oculus ASW kicks in planetside/asteroid rings etc. which doesn’t bother me but I know some people are more sensitive to the frame rate change & artefacts.

For the motherboard, I ended up going for a Gigabyte z370p.

OP. I upgraded to an i7-8700k running at 4.7ghz and have a GTX 1070. It very happy with the performance with most settings at high/ultra and HMD 1.5.

Sure it's not as crisp as 1440P on a monitor, but for me, immersion > more pixels.

Hopefully Pimax 8K will solve the FOV / pixel issue somewhat, but I suspect a 1080Ti / 1180 (etc) will be needed to get maximum benefit.

I do not regret going for an i7 8700k, 16GB of 3200mhz RAM, Dual slot AIO Cooler keeps everything both cool and quiet.

Also an M.2 drive for OS, and elite, An ssd for VR games or other things I deem worthy, also a 3tb for mass storage and main steam library.

If you can, I always recommend going all out ;)

FDev recommends an i7-3770k as the minimum cpu for VR. Since they did not recommend the i5-3570K it implies the deeper caches and/or hyperthreading on the i7 are needed to get enough performance out of E: D for VR. They still don't give a minimum for an i5 or i3 even though modern models should be able to keep up. Of all the gear you are looking at getting, I am guessing the HMD will be the first you want to upgrade. Current models are great but we all want better. To be as VR future proof as possible I recommend getting an 8700 or 8700k if you can afford it.

16GB of ram is certainly enough, I doubt 32GB will give noticeably better performance at the moment. Get 2 sticks of 8GB and a motherboard with 4 ram slots so you can upgrade easily when required.

Your 1070 will do for now and with new cards coming out soon I would hold on to that one until something affordable that is much better than a 1080ti becomes available.

Windows 10 is the minimum OS for some of the Oculus features such as Dash and ASW.

There is possibly one argument to be made for waiting u til a new range of CPU's so to no longer be affected by the meltdown and spectre exploits.

Then again I got my i7 8700k a mere month or so before this hit and I didn't notice any performance degradation after the patches.

CPU's do matter in gaming now, and I'm definitely seeing good usage over all 12 threads on my CPU.
And my i7 4790k was not keeping up with the 1080ti.

Inwould see my frames drop to <45fps and my you was running at <40%.
This would happen when a couple of threads hit 80%. Then I would stay at 45fps with noticeable artefacting around every edge in the cockpit and hud.
At times combat in res sites where nearly impossible since it was like driving through a rainstorm with no wipers.

And would stay like that until I got all eight threads under 45% which honestly didn't happen until I engage cruise.

Now with 8700k I can practically crank all settings apart from SS/hmd-q and when I now hit ASW it's only for a very short time or specific reason.
And even though I am in reprojection the artefacts are significantly less pronounced.

In short.
I'm sure you could get great performance out of an i5 etc.
But there are games, and for VR that really can use a beefy CPU and fast RAM.

Only thing I could have done better would be one of those massive workstation cpus but that would have tripled my build cost and that I suspect would have been overkill.

And yes. w10.
We can hate all the reporting and forced updates etc etc. And I really do.
But I have built this for VR. And hamstringing my vr performance just to run an ancient os would be moronic.
And most problems with updates more often seem to happen when to try to avoid them.

Thx a lot.

So I7 8700k is the way to go. I hope it will solve all my VR problems and enjoy better graphics.

Yep, i will hold my 1070 till the prices return to normal ( i hope it'll be soon enough ).

As others have said the CPU really does matter in VR. I've got an i5 4670K at 4.3 GHZ and it often bottlenecks my GTX 1080.

I literally got the parts to upgrade today so this is very topical for me. I've been toying with upgrading for over a year and I started building it this afternoon:

I already have an M.2 Nvme Samsung Evo, a good power supply and a EVGA GTX 1080 ftw, but the new bits are:

i7 8700K
Z370 MSI Gaming Pro Carbon AC
Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 (3000) 16GB
NZXT Kraken X52
Corsair Crystal 460X RBG

It's gonna look like a chavs wedding disco :D

Well, sadly, that it won't do.
But it might be as close as we can get for now. :p

May I ask a random question about your current rig? I am searching for days if my MS-7707 Mainboard (Medion, right?) could handle modern GPUs and it seems that from 7970 on it does not boot anymore with newer AMD cards. I found some rigs from users in different forums where they use, for example, a 1070 with that mainboard.

So, are you really using the MS 7707 from Medion with a normal GTX 1070 and if so, which bios version do you use?

Thank your very much :)

Yep , it's a medion , can't remember the exact version of the Mothoboard, it was a medion erazer from around 2009 - 2010.

I had no problems with the Gigabyte 1070 g1 i bought 1 year ago. I don't remember flashing my BIOS in the last 5 years......

I will try to plugin again my old pc and see what BIOS Version had installed.

I'm currently using a new setup so beside the 1070 everything is brand new.

To be honest if you can I'd be waiting for 7nm GPU and CPUs, which is going to major step forward in terms of performance and thermal efficiency, but they're 12 months away...I'm still using an Ivy Bridge CPU (Intel i5 3*** series) but looking to do a major upgrade to either Ryzen 3 or Intel's latest next year...

If I were you I would have just overclocked that 2700k. I took mine from 3.5 to 4.7 on air very easily and as you can imagine it makes a big difference.

That absolutly sounds like my PC. So, I think I will give it a try :). Only if you dont mind, but the BIOS version would also be great.
