Newcomer / Intro Advice to newcomers; start doing missions with rare Engineering components SOON.

Rare Engineering components are provided as mission rewards and in High Grade Emission USS's, and its apparent that these are more frequently found prior to unlocking the relevant Engineer, so include the grind of low paying missions for Exquisite Focus Crystals, Modified Embedded Firmware, Pharmaceutical Isolaters, and Imperial Shielding asap as the game's RNG is programmed to provide less of these items when you're actively looking for these items.

Ohh cynicism set to max! ;)

(P.S. I find MEF in abundance.)

I've restarted the game recently, always considered myself a noob. I wouldnt know what the engineering components were if the slapping me in the face. I'm just interested in credits and rep/influence atm, is there somewhere that can ELI5 about the engineers?

Normally I would refer you to the manual but it has not been updated to the recent HUGE changes to Engineers. So some resources :

INARA website - all data in one place - pretty good: https://inara.cz/galaxy-engineers/

The engineers sub-forum on this site (OK but you have to trawl): https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php/180-Engineers

Otherwise, ask in this forum, friendly help available here.

Don't worry to much about collecting 1;2;3 grade Data as the high grade stuff 4 & 5 can be converted into whatever you need later, my point is that some of the rarest items pop up as mission rewards frequently when one isn't looking for them, I suggest you grab these missions with both hands when they're presented, Exquisite Focus Crystals and Modified Embedded Firmware especially, and don't worry if you think you have too many, They multiply up when traded/converted into lower grade components.

If you go to a Material Trader note the quantities of the items required to convert a Grade 1 into a Grade 5, and vice verse, lots required for conversion of grade 1 to Grad 5 but Grade 5 to grade anything else no problem.

Trust me, snap up those EFC and MEF missions whenever they present themselves.

dunno, thanks for this advice and from now on that is what I will be doing as I didn't know what info you gave. Very helpful to me, again thanks!
