Advices for selling my exploration data

Hey commanders! This is my first post and i'm looking for some useful tips for selling my data. I've been out of the bubble with my little Hauler for over 5 months. Now that i'm coming back to civilization I'd like to take the maximum profit of my trip. I have an idea but I need you to tell me if it's a bad one and if I should change my mind.

So, let's go:
1. Pledge my alliance to Li Yong Rui.
2. Going directly to Maia System (I think it's controlled by Li Yong Rui).
3. Rank up my Li Yong Rui alliance by selling part of my data and then get profit of the 200% bonus for more data (i'll keep some).
4. Buy 1 unit of meta alloys in Maia.
5. Buy some shield (I don't have it actually) for the trip to farseer engineer.
6. Give the meta alloy and sell all the data left to farseer (so I can upgrade my FSD).
7. Go with my estimated profits of 20M (I hope, maybe more) to a system controlled by Li Yong Rui that sells Vulture (20% discount in ships and outfitting).

That's it! Is it a good idea? I'd make all this in solo mode.

Thank you so much and fly safe!

Flying around the bubble in a shieldless Hauler while carrying exploration data sounds rather risky.

2.-3. won't work. powerplay ranking can't be bought by exploration data. here is an how-to-video; i personally wouldn't risk exploration data in the process, though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tw1U46LtHdc

6. you still need materials to do your FSD, but "ranking" (getting access to higher grades) with farseer by selling exploration data works. here is an older, but still valid guide: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...-Engineers-A-Guide-for-the-Returning-Explorer

Oh, I didn't know I can't get powerplay ranking by selling data. Nevermind then. And I did know that i needed materials for the upgrade, but if I sell some data to them I'll keep the ranking? Then with the recipe I'd go to collect the materials.

Not even far below from it? 300-400ly

Thank you for both replies!

Other than the fact that you can't rank up with PP by selling data.. (or with fed/empire, just so you know)... do not risk 5 months of data by trying to rank up in PP in a hauler. Even with full shields it's easy prey for even NPC's. My suggestion is to go straight to Farseer and sell all data there. After 5 months you will get a very nice sum with which you will be able to afford a far more capable ship which will be capable of surviving NPC attacks. Trying it in a hauler is more than likely to lead to yet another "died and lost all data, bad game design, am done with game thread". Just don't do it.

What I do highly advise is hiring the services of Iridium Wing - with over 200 successful escorts and no explorers lost, IW can keep you and your data safe all the way to the landing pad. Here's a discord invite, if interested: https://discord.gg/5rQCm

- yes, you can gain access to higher grade blueprints by selling exploration data. see link above :)

- generally speaking, while approaching a port in a high security system at the edge is quite safe, flying through the bubble with cargo, especially low security systems, is risky. every jump into an inhabited system is a "roll" on interdiction - more so with cargo. hauler is an exceptional bad idea, because it is slow. and weak. i would suggest at least getting a cobra mkIII with shields, good thrusters and powerdistributor, shield, point defence and chaff, when you intend to transport meta-alloys through the bubble to farseer. btw. - when i returned, i met up with a fellow player, who brought me an MA to farseer - teh safiest way. still i would suggest reequiping your explo-vessel bubble ready at a port at the edge - filter the galaxy map for high security systems, pick a station close to entry point.

^So much this!^

While you're still ~ 1000 LY outside the bubble, find a quiet place (make sure there are no other ships around, even NPC's) , drop out of SC, bring up the galaxy map and change the display to show government types. Find the nearest system with any kind of government (but try to avoid anarchy ;))
If you have system data for that system, open the system map. Ideally you want one with a station not too far from the main star (and make sure it has Universal Cartographics. Almost all of them do.)
If you're coreward of the bubble, you might want to try searching the galaxy map for "Pratchett's Disc". It's a low security system, and the station is quite away from the star, but it's over 300 LY outside the bubble with a low population so it doesn't get much traffic.
Fly the last 1000 LY or so in solo or private group.
I wouldn't worry about ranking up with engineers, just have plenty of materials. 3 or 4 grade 1 upgrades (any type) will get you grade 2 access (you don't have to apply them, but it will cost materials) 3 or 4 grade 2 upgrades will get you grade 3 access, and so on, but save the grade 5 materials for when you need them.
Welcome back, CMDR.

Wow, so many good advices, thanks! That's my plan now: when I'm 1000ly from the bubble I'll search for a safe system to go (no war, high security and other useful filters I'll find in the galaxy map). I'll buy in that system some A grade shields and thrusters, Then I'll use same safety filters to go to Farseers and sell the data there! (If any friend of mine can buy me a meta alloy and bring it to me). Once again, thank you so much for all the useful tips!

If you're just stopping to upgrade (not sell your data) high-tech and/or Industrial systems with a large population are best, but if the population is high, make sure the security is too!

I had explored out "west" so when I came back, first system was Sothis. I went to Sothis Mining and sold enough data to get allied with Sirius Corp, needed to access one of the engineers, I forget which now. Also sold what little cargo I had.

Next I went to Khun and sold enough to get G5 access with Martuuk, then (nervously) crossed the entire bubble to get to Deciat and sold the remaining to get G5 with Farseer.

Worked out well. In retrospect I probably should have at least beefed up my AspEx shields before crossing the bubble with 30M of exploration data. But without cargo I didn't have much problem.

That reply is encouraging me to do the same, but... didn't you have to buy some commodities as donation before selling the data to martuuk and farseer?

I would suggest, especially if you want/need the money from your data, just sell as quick as possible and dont bother with the engineer unlocking...
It's really easy to unlock them with only crafting grade 1 recipes without risking the loss of your data...
Dont have numbers, I'm sure others have done the math... ;)
But prospecting for an hour or two should give you enough basic material like iron, sulphur and such to level an engineer...

I had unlocked Martuuk and Farseer with Soontill Relics and Meta Alloys before I went exploring. The trip to Maia for the Meta Alloys was my first experience with a long distance trip, and the first time I used a fuel scoop. Sort of a dry run. Bought a DBX for the trip. Also its a 300 LY trip that satisfied another Martuuk requirement. Didn't like the DBX so I sold it and bought an AspEx shortly after, did a CG to fund some upgrades, then went exploring for 5 weeks.

Some other options. If you want to unlock Liz Ryder you could sell some data to the Eurybia Blue Mafia to get cordial status with them, but sounds like you have more than enough for that. You could also sell to Sirius Corporation to unlock the Sirius permit which is useful for unlocking Marco Qwent and ultimately Professor Palin

Unlocking Farseer is easy. So is ranking up with her. Losing all your hard earned exploration money because some NPC interdicts your Hauler won't be. Play it safe.
