On Monday, 28 October, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) announced the new status of the African Penguin. The African Penguin has been uplisted to Critically Endangered by the IUCN, revealing it is one step away from becoming extinct in the wild. The bird is the first penguin species (of the 18 species globally) to meet the criteria for this classification. The African Penguin has already lost 97% of its population and could be extinct in less than 4,000 days if nothing changes. I feel the penguin's conservation status needs to be changed to Critically Endangered in the next update.
