After playing cyberunk, and watching the Odyssey reveal, I'm now concerned about Odyssey...

I have played a bit of Cyberpunk, I know, don't play on launch day... But after playing it, I was a bit disappointed that the NPC's are very much "bullet sponges", like emptying a pistol clip into an NPC's face doesn't kill them, and I know about the idea that it's an RPG so there will be character stats to build up, better weapons to purchase and enhance through crafting... But still; after ten consecutive headshots, nothing should still be standing, let alone still be charging and shooting at me...

And this relates to Odyssey, how?

Simples - having seen the Odyssey reveal, there was quite a bit of FPS combat shown, and at one point a character light up blue, with what was presumably a shield, and in general the footage showed hostile characters still advancing despite taking direct hits from heavy fire. So even from that short clip, it looks like Odyssey NPC's, and presumably players, are going to be more akin to battlemechs than soldiers in terms of their "hitpoint" capacity, and that is frankly, extremely disappointing. I'm also a bit dismayed that there were no RPG style moments in the reveal, for example there was no dialogue interaction between CMDRs and NPC's, this points to Odyssey being what many feared, "space legs" (Odyssey) being little more than a shallow gunfest :-(

One of the biggest things I wanted for "space legs" was the roleplaying game side of it, say like GTA-V and mass effect. I wanted to walk in the starports, build relationships with the NPC's, negotiate with them even if that was through dialogue trees like cyberpunk, I wanted to get immersed in the galaxy and sidetracked on little sidequests, I wanted stealth options like splinter cell games, I wanted sharp tactical combat like the original operation flashopint or its progeny the ARMA series. I did not, and still do not want another run and gun shooter. And given that the mainstay of the reveal at the game awards was just that, run and gun bullet sponge combat, with a few landscape images, I'm now tepidly ambivalent about Odyssey, indeed, I still haven't pulled the trigger on the pre-order.

Personally, I think I need more information about the non combat aspects of the out of the cockpit gameplay that will be in Odyssey, and maybe others feel the same? Maybe they only had that couple of minutes of "air time" and went for the flashy action packed dramatic first person combat content for maximum impact in that narrow timeframe? Maybe there is a world of "immurshun" waiting to be revealed to us? But I think I'll not be the only person asking themselves is a run and gun shooter what I want to purchase? And if that is what Odyssey is, will it's new terrain / skybox rendering tech be important enough to me to buy Odyssey? And more poiniently, if after two and a half years the only new stuff is run and gun shoot shooty that I'm not interested in and some prettier, but still desolate, planets to fly / drive across, is Elite still a game for me.

There is only one thing that can answer those questions, some noncombat First Person gameplay reveal(s) -so what do you guys have up your sleaves to wow us with @Arthur Tolmie @Bruce Garrido @Stephen Benedetti And to the general forum, was there anything I missed from the Odyssey reveal video that would address the concerns I've raised in the previous paragraphs?

EDIT: updated with Odyssey gameplay reveal trailer for reference

Well, I expect EDO to be the station boards done via faces and NPCs rather than a pure board like now.

yes i notice this too, But they are supposed to be like that they have armoured t-shirts on and the amount of weapon flash is way ott.

Haven't you ever taken eleven rounds to the head then? It happened to me once, and I went to the pub after I'd plucked the rounds out - no lasting damage. Nobody called me a bullet sponge.

In case you're wondering, I'm not taking the pee - I just wrote a really random answer. Apologies mate ;)

Since our CMDR's suits have shields, I'd expect hit location to be largely irrelevant until those shields fail...just as it is for ships.

That said, from what little we've been shown, I didn't quite get the impression of too much bullet sponginess. Will have to see a lot more before we have any firm conclusions though.

I have similar concerns, although fdev have already said that we will be able to interact with at least some of the NPCs. I’m also hopeful that we may have NPC crew members sat beside us on our ships.

Why dont you just wait for the remaining dev diary, and more information they have planned?

Rather than demanding CMs jump to your tune?

Their marketing plan is not for you to determine.

no RPG style moments in the reveal

If you can't find a real RPG, some times you just have to improvise...

Cork the hammer! (Can't spell the word on here). Quite a sophisticated firing pin lol!

Once I made a gas powered under arm potato cannon. It was awesome - went off like a shotgun! Homemade is such fun!!

Yeah it depends where you get hit to be fair, but I bet that left an excellent bruise lol! At least it didn't break the skin, right ;)

I totally agree with you. The preview looks amazing regarding graphically, HUD, etc, but I'm not in the market for another FPS.

I just think the combat mechanics are more finished and ready for prime time than NPC dialogue, biological sampling, scavenging, etc.

Building a polished first-person shooter that features variable gravity and whatnot is obviously the hardest and most complex part of the update to introduce with the myriad of different animations, physics, UI stuff... Combat probably relies on all the fundamental mechanics that the rest of the update uses, in the most complex and intensive way. Makes sense that that would be what has the most resources piled into it first, and therefore is in a more presentable state sooner.

The other stuff presumably builds on the same on-foot mechanics, minus the gunplay and with a few minigames and selection screens added.

We've seen distant glimpses of terminals in spaceports that show the wrong images and are generally a bit glitched. We've seen the sampling tool, but they've gone out of their way not to show it being used on actual organics.

Which all points to that stuff just not being in a finalised, public-ready state yet. I'm sure that doesn't mean the update is all combat, it just means that's the first part ready because it's the hardest part to get right.

Yeah save your investment in the game. If you expect anything more than an fps version of horizons its only your time and kittens on the chopping block. Its frontier developments. You need to think differently, to match how they do.

Think about every single headline feature for elite frontier has ever released. What percentage of them was below expectations. Not even close to meeting them. Its been so long the only thing you can do is delete the white knights, wonder how frontier can act like they do, and accept the reality of each patch as it is.

There wasn't nearly enough game play shown in that trailer for you to sensibly form a useful opinion on this. Not even close.

I'm concerned about it as much as you, despite generally disliking the common insta gib, one shot kill design many "realistic" shooters prefer, I also really don't like bullet sponges. It fits in RPG shooters (borderlands and I'm guessing cp2077 but I've only played a couple hours so far) with bosses and special skills and legendary weapons etc... But I'd hate it in Elite, just as much as I hate the way ship vs ship combat has gone that way.

But there's no way you could know how it'll be from that video. Just not even worth the time to critically assess in your own head, let alone hold a useful, constructive discussion about here.

I doubt we'll properly know until Alpha. And believe me, I'm going to be the first in Alpha to shout about it if it's too spongy.

Well, I would be more concerned with balancing issues. Perhaps as with ships there will be Meta Suits. Shield Suits will be OP compared to Hull Suits because we all would collapse under 20 tons of heavy duty deep plated underwear.

And how will Space Suit Armor compare to Ship Armor? How many volleys of efficient phasing PAs will it take to take down a Space Suit Shield?

And of course Power Play modules for Space Suits. Aisling Duval's "Chestplate" will no doubt give 100 "charisma".
