After several months of playing, I've only just realised that...

So many little things in this game that are easy to miss. There is no comprehensive manual, and if there was if would be far too long to read ;)

I accidentally hit the tab button the other day after 6 months of playing. I accidentally discovered i could boost! Hurrah!

Edit: Also, only figured out what pressing the middle mouse button did about 3 months into the game :)

Actually, there is a fairly comprehensive manual - it's linked in the launcher. It's not so good for stuff implemented after 1.2, but it has most of the basic stuff pretty thoroughly covered.

It's a long read though, you're right about that.

I knocked my throttle against the desk recently. It turned on silent running, which I have never used before. I tried to figure out which button I pressed to turn it off, and nothing I pressed seemed to work. I slowly cooked to death :)

You could gave switched it off via the right side popup panel ... far right tab.
On the same panel I recently tried dropping the instrument illumination level (try 3 squares). It makes a big difference, I can see space better!

Wait you can hyperspace to other systems??? I've been flying between these two space stations for months now..

This made me laugh out loud haha :D

This is the truth.

...you can find your selected hyperspace destination using the compass!

All this time I've been randomly maneuvering my ship around until the targetted system came into view!

D'oh! I'll get me coat...

I remember it being ages until I realised there are arrows on the station holographic that help you locate the entrance!

My Dad did exactly the same - only during a fight in a res.
He raged all the way to the kettle to make a cup of tea!

There's been loads of little "tweaks" I have discovered over time that simplify the game, which I don't know if they are documented anywhere, manual or forums. Most have just become part of how I play now. For example, for weeks I was writing down names of systems I had read of in forums on scrap bits of paper so I could enter them into the galaxy map correctly, until I realised you could copy into your clipboard and use ctrl+v to paste into the navigation on the galaxy map.

My desk is a lot tidier now and I don't have to keep looking for that pen that doesn't work.
