Agony's Visual Guide to ELWs, WWs, and AWs

Something that i've been meaning to do for a while, and thats helping people with the Mk 1 Eyeballing of planets to know if they are worth scanning. Yeah, i know about listening to the system map for an audio clue, but i have to listen 10 times to get an idea of what i might be, and still get it wrong.

This is a bit easier, although by no means foolproof since there are some "false friends" around.

Is it possible to guess what they are from this thing?

Exploration hasn't been my strong point, but I do enjoy it in moderation...

Nope, there is little variation there. Something that FD could do with improving at some point.

You can, however, tell for sure whether or not it's a metal rich planet. Though, that's about the extent of its utility.

Very nice. Now we just need some of Frank Herbert's Arrakis-like ELWs. Herbert was inspired by the moving sand dunes of Oregon, which slowly ate up forest and caused havoc, when writing his First Dune novel.

+1 for sharing your nice work.

You can also distinguish planets by listening to them in the local system map. Select a world and zoom in. Each planet type makes its own unique sound. Water worlds f.e. have a running water sound with a bit of wind, high metal content worlds have something like a vibrating metal plate and so on. Just in case you "havent heard" about.

Totally heard about, but i've got cheap speakers and cheap headphones, i can't hear any difference.

Oh, and if anyone has some radically different looking images of such worlds (from post 1.2 ish time, because many planets got texture updates around then) let me know, i can revise the original and add them.

The other problem with "listening" to planets is it conflicts with whatever else I or anybody may be listening to outside of the game. Visual guides are nice, +1 AA. I find a lot of flase friends myself, but unless I am racing I will usually scan HMC worlds anyway, so no biggie.

Maybe add to your chart any icons of Gas giants with water or ammonia based life. They pay decently well and can usually be scanned from a long distance, making them convenient scans (usually).

I thought about that. There are two kind of indicators that are likely to increase the chance of life on gas giants i've noticed. Neither guaranteed though. One is closeness to the star. Generally speaking, the hotter the gas giant due to proximity, the higher the chance. Also, not certain about this, but some gas giants have lots of tiny spots, and these seem to be more likely to have life.

But its not something that can really give a good indication.

Thank you very much! Can't rep you again, too, so +1 virtually.
Problem with the false-friends is: you will scan them anyway:D , cause you won't know for sure until the scan is complete. I am listening with quite good headphones, too. But those HMCs, that look like water worlds, mostly don't give the saw-like tones of normal HMC that Akira described, but emit the sound of blowing wind. I find it hard to distinguish, if there are water-sounds mixed in or not.

Very good post, +1 rep.
I'm sad you and other people can't listen to planet sounds. I have cheap headphones (20 euros) and never missed a planet type from its sound. Describing a sound with words can be difficult and subjective, so i added audio recordings. It's obviously my fault not beeing able to pass my knowledge to others.
If mods will ever allow another sticky, we could merge our guides in a "Know everything from system map using visual and sounds" thread.

Akira, your post made me re-read your guide again.
I have to apologize. It seems, that I somehow mixed up the HMC (blowing wind) and Metal-rich-planets (saw-like or electric-guitar-like-sounds). I'm at work now and can't check, but tonight I will tune up my sound and re-listen to the differences.

It's not your fault, i switched the description with the last update. I'm going on listening to planets and tweaking the guide, trying to stay simple, but it's quite a task. I'm also sure that the devs themselves are tweaking planet sounds in the various updates similar to what they do with visuals. Few months ago ammonia world had a different sound, for instance.
