For over a week now EDDB.IO shows ZERO systems in Famine... I decided to double check it on the game galaxy map filter and it is correct.

Another bug?!

More of a design flaw than a bug. The individual components are all working as designed, but the overall effect is that Famine is virtually impossible to cause for a system's controlling faction.

Fixing this in a way that allows controlling factions to sometimes go into Famine without making it the most common state for non-controlling factions is a tricky problem.

What I mean is that I'd go to a system in Famine and search for a "Distribution Centre" to scan wake signals for datamined farming... and I'd find a LOT of systems in Famine... not a single one anymore to be found.

Correct. That's because famine is impossibly difficult to achieve, because:
  • famine is the extreme lower end of the economic slider for a faction
  • because of that, it now competes directly with positive economic effects for a faction, rather than being able to be achieved regardless of any other factors.
  • the game is grossly imbalanced in its favour for positive effects from commander actions, rather than negative ones
Specifically, fd see negative states as coming from commander failure primarily, and positive from commander success.

Since players don't deliberately fly like potatoes, there's next to no famine state.

Fun fact which i posted on another thread... a total absence of food in the galaxy still wouldn't cause famine.

(Very short version)

Thanks mate! I really should have payed a little more attention to BGS... and in this game we learn something new every day. I know (or at least I think I do) is that you can force the controlling faction to a lockdown by killing system security NPCs... can we force Famine somehow as well?

Please, can you post the link to the other thread you mention, if you're so inclined.

Cheers!

Food Shortages Spark Civil Unrest

11 OCT 3305

A recent commodity appeal has spurred civil unrest in several systems, with civilians fearing that their respective governments are unable to cope with the widespread crop failures.

Vox Galactica published a report on developments by journalist Adalyn Cross:

“Following crop failures on a massive scale, the projected availability of staple foodstuffs has drastically fallen in a number of systems. This, in turn, has triggered increased prices, panic buying and stockpiling - all of which have exacerbated the problem.”

“On the most severely impacted worlds, such as Birmingham and Simpson's Eden, citizens are taking to the streets and demanding answers from the authorities. But with food supplies being strangled at the source, it appears little can be done to appease their frustration.”

Nathaniel Lopez of the Galactic Welfare Trust, a charitable aid foundation, made this statement:

“Low-income families and those dependent on welfare have been hit hardest by these shortages. Our organisation is distributing food cartridges, but frankly the magnitude of this situation dwarfs our efforts. Billions of people are at risk of going hungry if a solution cannot be found.”

“We call upon food manufacturers to help alleviate the problem by reducing prices. To those companies aiming to make a short-term profit, be warned – you could be contributing to significant loss of life from starvation.”
