Aiming at the automatically appearing side panels using VR

When using my Vive (and previously the DK2) I notice that when I'm not in the perfect center spot of my cockpit, the panels don't appear when I look straight at them.

My guess is that only the angle in which I'm looking is taken into account and not the relative position I'm in. The consequence is that when I'm moving in my seat and perhaps lying down in my ship or standing up to stretch a few muscles, it's really hard to make the sidepanels pop up without having to look at them from the corner of my eye.

Anybody else notice this?

I personally prefer to have the side panels activated with buttons. I find if I'm trying to keep an eye on a target, and I accidentally activate the panels, it can be distracting. Conversely, not getting in the sweet spot to activate them was a pain.

One of the first thing I did when I got into VR was assign the panels to a hat switch on my HOTAS.. Like you said, while keeping track of a target, the automatic panels were really distracting. I really hate it in the SRV.

Ditto for the hat switch.
Another bonus of not having to look at the panels is you can make activation on memory or with macro's.
Or most of the time I only half look at the panels, I have been playing for over a year and a half now so it's all in my fingertips at this point.

But really the pop up on look for the menu screens are only cool to begin with, after a while you tend to realise it's quite impractical.

on the X52, I use the lower stick hat for my pips. I also use the same hat for panels by binding the UI focus to a button on the throttle that when held, the direction of the hat opens the corresponding panel.

I don't have buttons to spare for panels, so I use Voice Attack.

I also can't stand the auto pop up panels, especially when someone makes a video and has GUI-effects on, and then they look around and the panels are popping left and right every half second.

I kind of wish you could select a fixed location for all panels to appear, as you can only have one open at a time anyway.

I'm the same - I turned off the auto pop-up for the panels and assigned them to a hat on my Warthog stick.

I can turn on the left/right/chat-message window or down on that hat just cycles them all including the SRV window too.

Becomes second nature to pop the button and know the screen is there when you look left/right at the panel. You can just look away and press the button again to turn it off.
