Aircar VR - free techdemo

Have you guys tried the Aircar VR? - it is a free Techdemo in the Oculus store.

OMG this is awesome and immersive!

Maybe someday we can have this in ED :D

Yes, it's really impressive. Very limited of course but the visuals are great. I like the Blade Runner-esque setting.

This is how I think landing on planets with atmosphere should look like. But I don't believe we'll ever get this - not since Frontier ruled out further paid expansions.

This is like the fourth thread about this in less than two months.

I remain utterly unimpressed.
Detail level barely on par with Google earth's 3d buidlings and sprites like it was 1996.

Made me feel a little sick - I think it's the weirdness of using the touch controller joysticks for flight, and pitch and roll on separate joysticks.... (I can fly NOE down canyons for hours in ED and feel fine).

It does show how relatively simple geometry and textures can look really good with nice lighting. Bodes well for some kind of future ED atmospheric flight. Imagine that coupled with something like Google Earth VR!

Did anybody notice that the flying cars on the lowest level are just 2D sprites?

I wish Elite Dangerous would make some ships with a tight fit cockpit like in aircar. I would also love if we could get cockpit customisation for existing ships. That is something I would pay for as cosmetics and ship kits aren’t that interesting to me.. I’m a bit tired of the sameyness of all the cockpits and also the hud, UI radar and so forth.

I absolutely love this, one of my favourite tech demos.

It's nice, but when I tried it I couldn't get the sound to work. In all other VR games and apps the sound works just fine.

Are you using the built-in headphones or your own? While I was awaiting replacement Oculus headphones I switched to using my own and found that there was no sound in Aircar. When I switched back to using the built-in ones it was fine. If you are using your own then I'd recommend switching back to the built-ins just to give this a go because the audio really adds to it. Great experience, spent many hours just flying around. Very Blade Runner'esque.

Have you tried out the fighters? They are very tight fit. The Eagle isn't bad either.

Saw the OP a few day ago and finally had a chance to try it. This is almost exactly what I had in mind for Atmospheric landing in ED (all that is missing is the weather buffeting the ship (aircar).

So long as there is variation in weather, and significant variation in cityscapes, I'd be very happy if it was like this demo.

Lol when did Frontier say that?

They didn't... They did say they were abandoning the current paid expansion model though (or words to that effect). The problem for some people seemed to be them operating a season pass model with limited up front content. I reckon the reason the next 'Season' is free is so that they can develop and release the next expansion, feature complete, in 2019 and charge for it without a similar backlash.

Thats what I reckon (and prey for) [smile]

Well Zan Antonaci implied in this recent post in reply to concerns from LEP holders, that there would also be paid content in 2018 as well as the free Beyond updates. They're just not ready to announce it yet. Which would be pretty darn great if that's the case. My bet would be on there being some atmospheric planetary types being added, given that improvements to the planetary generation are being made with the Beyond updates. But who knows? Well they do but they're not telling yet.
