Aisling with Patreus ? is it logical ? Oo

Hello,

i was wonder why Aisling who's againt slavery is with Patreus who's indebted system to create slavery?

Are you sure that Frontier didn't make a mistake on te story?

It could be very logical. 1# There is a possibility Patreus had a part in the assassination attempt on the emperor, were the attempt successful Aisling, with Patreus's backing, would have been a shoe in the as empress. For his pains Patreus would be closer to the throne himself and could marry Aisling to become emperor. 2# if the emperor's wedding had gone through then Airissa would have been the next in line. This lends credence to the timing of the assassination. Also keep in mind that Aisling's abolistionist work may not be sincere and is instead a ploy to pull popular support from the old guard of the empire (such as Zemina Torval). If her efforts enjoy enough success then she could be made empress by popular demand.

Well, she's got her father's finances to start with. Those 50M paychecks have to come from somewhere.

It could be very logical.

The funny thing is, nobody is thinking "maybe they're just in love" :D

I'd almost forgotten about that pairing.. been a looong time since I saw anything about it. Last it was she offered sanctuary to fleeing Quivarans, and in recognition of this Patreus declared he wouldn't hold the masses responsible for the debt. If I remember correctly that is.
Maybe Aisling saw this coming and manipulated him so that he didn't enslave another population, and now it's done things have cooled off, hence why we haven't seen anything of this in a while.

Don't they [the Empire] have something like the UKs royal civil list?

"That, Commander, is a tangled issue for any Outsider to comprehend. What I will say is that even an autocrat cannot impose something on trillions of people if they do not want it. Slavery is bigger than one person. It is a matter for the citizenry to decided. They must make the choice."

As for Aisling, whether or not that's still happening is unclear, but it seemed to come around at a time when Aisling lacked political power and Patreus lacked blood connections. I believe a practical arrangement was made in order to raise the profiles of both.

Well i can understand Patreus motivation. but for Aisling, this relation doesn't correspond with her "Stop Slavery Stupid".

i hope that frontier can give us some answer via "A Fireside Chat with Serena" :p

She always hit on Torval, while her more dangerous enemy is Arissa who try to get the crown.

Aisling lacked political power
well.... it could be an explanation... not great but better than nothing i guess

Well, she's the Emperor's granddaughter, but wasn't formally recognised as heir. Neither did she hold any sort of Senatorial seat (like Arissa does). So all she had going for her at that stage was popular support and whatever stipend she gets paid as a member of the royal family. She also didn't have any military muscle aside from whatever independents she could persuade. Patreus brought serious political assets and a heavy private military fleet to the table. Plus he was an obvious choice for an alliance, since as you say Aisling doesn't think much of Torval, and as far as Aisling's concerned she views Arissa as trying to steal what Aisling thinks is rightfully hers. And with a male-female personal relationship dynamic there's a real chance at lasting alliance and power for both, as they could be co-rulers, and produce the next generation - so less chance of the alliance breaking down over squabbles for power as both would be invested in sharing and securing power together.

I don't think Aisling would stand for a pro-slavery stance from Patreus long term if they stayed together - neither would he stand for her views being opposed to his own on slavery, long-term, if he really were pro-slavery. I'm therefore inclined to believe that, as I said, the Senator is keeping quiet on his personal thoughts on slavery - for now acknowledging the tradition whilst it's still important to so many people, and possibly privately being open to the idea of abolishing it, as long as that's what the citizenry decides in favour of.
