But isn't that the essence of exploration? You dont know if you are gonna find something - but you do it none the less?
There's a difference between the real unknown, and a programmed unknown though.
I agree with you but look at these two different situations:
I have a Cobra in game, I can explore a represenation of our galaxy, I don't know if the developers have programmed things to be found out there. Whether they are waiting for a specific bit of code to be run or whether I can actually land on a planet and find something new. There's been no confirmation that more "unknown things" from the patch notes are actually out there. It's designed by humans, so we know the limits on what will be out there.
I have a Cobra in real life, I can explore our ACTUAL galaxy, I have no idea what's out there, but this is the real world and we know there are many unknown things, such as the suspicious star that could have a super structure going around it. There are existing mysteries of the galaxy and it is known that we would find interesting and amazing things if we were to go out there. It's design is beyond human comprehension so who knows what will be out there.

It's two different versions of exploration, one is knowing there is a genuine unknown as it's science, one is not knowing if you're wasting your time as it's been programmed by your fellow human.
