Hmmm! I would have thought that someone could make an explanation, but all I get is fickle comments. Is this an alien sighting or not?
I've been playing this game for about 2000 hours. I've never seen "alien" before. Is it just the name of an NPC? In which case, why is the name showing, not just "Viper" like the others? I didn't target it as you can see to the right. The only time you get a name is when you've scanned them, but then it'll show the bounty or "no record" to the right of that panel.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, I think you may be looking at an NPC, called Alien (flying Viper III) ..
Keep your eyes peeled though .. it's in ways like this, they'll infiltrate and get in under the radar?

Did you attempt a scan? Attempt any direct visual contact? Get a bit of a chubby!

If you look to the right of the panel, it says "scan required". You don't get the name until you've scanned an NPC. Normally it would say "Viper" until scanned, like the "Cobra MKIV" and "diamondback Explorer" above it. The only time you get a name is when it's a category of NPC, like "System Defence Vessel" or "Federal Security Service", etc.

hehe. You don't need to complete the scan (ranking, faction) to get the name up though, that appears first of all.
We so need a "stolen" tag on ships. In case this ship was indeed stolen by ...

It looks from your screenshot that it's the name of the pilot, the ship type is a Viper MkIII.
Sometimes when you quickly move past an NPC (so they are in front) or they move in front of you it reveals the pilot name and ship type but not all of the details like rank and wanted status.
I think it's unlikely that it's an alien from what you've posted.....shame
Also if it was an alien I doubt the game would mark it as "Alien" more likely to be "unknown" or something of that nature.....I guess we'll find out at some point.

I'm in supercruise. I don't think you can get the name of a ship when it passes in front of you like that. I didn't scan anybody. I'm doing a Robigo run. I just looked at the panel to see if any Feds were about.
