Align Scenery & Windows?

How do I align scenery like a row of windows on a wall, or a line of bushes, or centering a cone on a cylinder to make a rocket? Is there an alignment tool (other than the grid) that I'm not finding?

You can use 'X' to place an object using the arrows (representing x, y and z directions).

I use this method when placing a row of anything (like lights) that I want to appear in a neat row. To use do this....

  1. Select the object you want to place
  2. Press x
  3. Move to the correct position
  4. Click the tick mark to place
  5. Using the arrows, move to place the next object
  6. When last item in placed, click the 'x' to finish

You can even swap objects partway through keeping the same orientation.

For windows on buildings, you could also try holding down 'f' to place the object in the middle of the wall. This does seem to have strange results with some pieces but with most it works well.

Hope this helps

You can use the Hotkey F to center lock any scenery items (windows,doors,trees,... ) without a grid on any piece with a grid (walls, roofs,...)
I Use it so often when i'm building, and it makes building a simple house ALOT faster, because you know it's in the center and don't have to stress your eyes :)
Also keep in mind that the checkbox surface lock (right down corner) can help alot when using this nice feature to align some scenery items in the right direction.

This feature even works with multiple items selected!!

Great video tutorial here (made by Geekism):

. . . 3. Move to the correct position . . .
This is the part I'm (as usual) having trouble with, that in 3D (and 2D!) apps I use an alignment tool for.

You might find this tutorial helpful. The specific subject might not be what you're after, but the techniques are applicable to building anything.

Learned lots, thanks! Nicely as these techniques compensate for lack of a true alignment tool, it still requires a lot of lining up things by hand/eye -- which I'm bad at, and therefor need a standard alignment tool, but it's a game so . . . [uhh]

FutureFear and Big Draco both -- didn't know that one, thanks! [up] That's resolved a solid half of my problems, and Bullethead's lovely tutorial helped muchly, but not as much as a standard alignment tool would (hinting broadly in Frontier's direction [sulk] ).

We all know the pain in our eyes to align object, there is lot's of room for improvement here.

I'm glad i coud help a bit, there are lot's of building techniques out there... youtube/google is your friend.

What i miss the most is actually a mirror function, because some pieces are not symetrical... and woud be nice to only have to build 1/4 of a building and then mirror them.

So @ Frontier devs: An alignment and mirror tool would be the best addition since we already have no collision.

If i come up with new building techniques i will post them here on forum :)
