Align with target? Supercruise problems..

I just died at a tourist beacon trying to activate my supercruise. A little ship was shooting my shieldless tourist ship and it would not go past the align with target msg... Is this supposed to happen. There was no target to aim too. It shoud have jumped out with lots of time to spare and almost no damage. But I died instead. Is there some change in mechanics that goes with this?!

If you were too close to the star, you had to get pointed away from the star (you'll see a blue target reticle) to engage. Even though you may not be headed to a specific target, you do need to be headed perpendicular to the star surface.

Also if you used the generic FSD keybind rather than the specific one for supercruise, it may have wanted you to align with the next system in your route. That's the main reason I specifically have a keybind for just supercruise set.

I used supercruise specifically. I did not have a jump destination as I was at my last destination. And I was in a tourist beacon when an assasin jumped in for the illegal passenger I had. But it would not jump out. I was having this problem since the last patch in exploration stuff. But there it doesn't kill you if you can't just immediately.

I was out of his lock range also. He was only in a small fed ship or something. I think it's a glitch. That or a really mean new mechanic.

I had the same thing occur (other than the getting blown up part) earlier today when I was close to a planet. As far as I could determine it wanted me to point more away from the planet, similiar to the star scenerio mentioned by @Timpraetor above. I don't recall ever having it happen in the past when close to planets, but I don't necessarily have the best memory either.

I was out of his lock range also.
I've seen this lately as well with a new account I created for playing in the new sector. I left the sector finally in a Hauler, dropped into a Threat 1 USS to grab some goods and a Sidewinder was popping me from over 6K out. If I could build a Sidey with 6K, no fall off beams, I'd have 15 of 'em :).

It's either aligning with the escape vector to escape the gravitational pull of the stellar body or, as mentioned before, the ship drifting slightly in any direction.
