Hello everyone, this is All Folks Considered, a program associated with Jotunheim Public Radio.
What I'd like to do is work with stories provided by you, the audience, about goings-on in the galaxy that are below the notice of the major news outlets like Galnet, but which help breath life into the numbers and words that make up systems and factions in a way that only a dedicated player, living his own story, truly can.
Our first is going to be called "Tales from the Frontier", and in it I would like to focus on smaller independent systems, fringe systems, and border systems. If you're a pilot that is primarily active in a system like that, post in this thread or drop me a private message and let me know, and we can hash out the details of what you think your system is like, and maybe draw it a bit more traffic while making it seeming a bit more real.

And here's our first entry, inspired by the person who contacted me originally and gave this idea, commander BoberBobertson.

All Folks Considered, Tales From the Frontier - A new series from Jotunheim Public Radio
Staring into the Maroine Sun
Maroine System, the border of Imperial Space. Only settled in the last hundred years, most of the quarter million population orbits what was once an Imperial terraforming project. Since the project's inception, however, a cult dedicated to the prophet known as Stargazer Bates swept the population, most of whom now consider themselves adherents. It was only last year that the station's leaders renamed the station Bates Vision and declared themselves independent of the Empire, generating a stir in the capitol, claming it to be the will of the Stars. This system's story has become the first in a new series for JPR's "All Folks Considered" that we're calling "Tales From the Frontier", where we look at independent, fringe, and little-known systems that are unlikely to be seen in most galactic newspapers, but still have a story to tell.
Since the declaration, there has been a growing tension between the major players in Maroine politics. The Maroine Theocracy, which maintains that secret wisdom from "Before there was life for Stars to cultivate" will be granted to those who gaze upon their majesty with the naked eye, still maintains popular support as they preach to the masses while guiding the ongoing terraforming effort, but they are no longer the only voice of the prophet. A splinter sect known simply as The Brotherhood has attracted a number of adherents in recent months. While their ideology is similar, their tactics are far more violent and extreme, and they advocate the "liberation" of goods carried by heathens. The Life Network, a local corporation, has found commercial success in appealing to the faithful, selling texts, "holy artifacts", trinkets and gospel not just in Maroine but to the minority of faithful in the nearby systems and across the galaxy at large. Many have claimed the corporation blasphemes against the true message of the prophet, but these claims do not seem to have slowed their rapid growth.
The final political power player in the system is composed of Imperial Loyalists in the Empire League, composed largely of those who do not wish to get caught up in the cult's religion. While they no longer control the station itself, they are still a not-insignificant player in local business and the terraforming effort, and maintain that while the Theocracy may control the station, once the project is completed the planet itself will belong to the Empire.
I spoke to one worried acolyte, on condition of anonymity, who said "Many, even the most faithful among my colleagues, seem to hope for a day when they may purge the heathens, heretics, and unfaithful with a lance of cleansing flame. They wish for a war that will end many lives - but is this truly the wisdom the stars reveal upon us? I cannot believe it, but I fear that too many do. We hear in the news every day of assassinations - at funerals, at weddings, even at religious events! All funded by shadowy figures pushing us ever closer to war. If this continues, the flames shall wash over us all, and there will be nothing but char and ruin."
This story could not have been possible without the help of local pilot BobertBobertson. Having caught the Stargazer bug and has turned his own eyes starward, he was kind enough to give me a tour of the system and introduce me to many of the locals, as well as sharing the best places to eat in system. Thanks for your help with this piece, Bob, and I hope that everything works out in the end for the people of Maroine, who despite their differences all welcomed me with open arms.
This is James Griffin with the Galaxy at Large on Jotunheim Public Radio, reminding all our listeners that our new is dedicated to bringing life to oft overlooked systems and the events that are shaping them, and reminding you that if you have stories of your own to share we'd love to hear them.
