Engineers Allegiance and Engineers

Hi!

I've got a question i really wonder noone asked so far (or at least i cant find the answer i am looking for)

What effect does the allegiance of an Engineer have?

Say i am pledged to the empire and visit an Engineer who's allegiance lies with the Federation. What ist going to happen? Can i even use the engineer?
And if not what about all the unlocks i did with that specific engineer? Will they come back when i unpledge?

Five engineers require a certain rank with Alliance, Feds, or Imps for access, but other than that it does not matter. You can't lose anything you gain with an engineer.

You can't actually pledge to a faction (Empire, Feds or Alliance); you can only pledge to Powers, who may or may not be one of those three factions.

None of the factions care in any way what your standing is with a different faction either, so far as in game mechanics.
